Tucholsky, Kurt, 1890-1935. Gesammelte Werke in zehn Bänden. Herausgegeben von Mary Gerold-Tucholsky und Fritz J. Raddatz. Reinbek bei Hamburg: Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag, 1985, 70.-119. Tausend, each volume about 450pp., PAPERBACK, 10 volumes, very good copies, previous owner's name and blindstamp in volume one. ONE: 1907-1918 - TWO: 1919-1920 - THREE: 1921-1924 - FOUR: 1925-1926 - FIVE: 1927 - SIX: 1928 - SEVEN: 1929 - EIGHT: 1930 - NINE: 1931 - TEN: 1932. - Tucholsky and this edition may seem obsolete and of little interest beyond experts in his work. This is deceptive. The vast bibliographical information at the end of volume ten also includes a list of book reviews contained in this edition, providing excellent contemporary views of life and society. A review of Ernst Thrasolt's book on Carl Sonnenschein (Catholic caritas leader in Berlin) says a great deal about World War I; a review of Hermann Kantorowicz's book on Germany and England exposes German nationalism as well as presuppositions about Bourgeois society he would like to do away with; on Friedrich Torberg's Der Schüler Gerber, Tucholsky shows a sensitivity to literary forms, the expected schema, and the creative breaks with them. As the collection is organized chronologically, it provides an on-the-spot view of the end of the Empire, the war, and the Weimar Republic from beginning to end. Very useful to students of Weimar era creativity who would like to know about the authors and events not associated with the ten remaining famous names who receive a chapter in every current publication. 9783499290015 ISBN 3499290014.

, Tucholsky, Kurt, 1890-1935. Deutschland, Deutschland über alles. Translated by Anne Halley, afterword and notes by Harry Zohn. Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 1972, 245pp., very good price-clipped dust-jacket, a few tiny nicks and tears and scratch across rear panel, very good large red cloth. Perceptive and ironic, by turns savage, scornful, or just plain funny, Tucholsky dissected the silly as well as the more sinister aspects of his time. The chief targets of his satire (and indignation) were the fatuousness of the German bourgeoisie and its institutions, the arrogance of power, the madness of nationalism and militarism; the chief objects of his compassion and sympathy were the poor and the exploited. These themes come together most powerfully in Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles, a "picture book" he produced in 1929 in collaboration with John Heartfield, the great pioneer of photo-montage.
