Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Volume I of the first English translation of ¿The Nights of Straparolä, originally published in 1894. A collection of stories in two volumes written by the Italian Renaissance author, Giovanni Francesco Straparola during the fifteenth century. The two volumes are divided into nights, where Lords, Ladies, damsels and gentlemen are gathered at a party in Venice and tell each other fairy tales, witty fables, and follies to entertain themselves. 74 tales are told over 13 nights, including folk and fairy-tales, novellas with themes of trickery and intrigue; and tragic and heroic stories. The collection includes some of the first known printed versions of European fairy tales, as they are known today, such as ¿Puss in Boots¿, ¿The Four Clever Brothers¿, ¿Donkeyskin¿ and others. Many of these tales have been collected or retold in later fairy tale collections, such as those by Giambattista Basile and the Brothers Grimm. This wonderful book is translated by W. G. Waters and is illustrated by E. R. Hughes. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's literature - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage classic illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine. None (illustrator). A limited edition of this collection of seventy five short stories from the late Medieval period - the work for which Straparola is best known. The title of the work is sometimes translated as 'The Facetious Nights' or 'The Pleasant Nights'. It includes some of the first known printed versions of some European fairy tales. Split into 'Nights' rather than chapters, it resembles Boccaccio's Decameron in terms of its frame structure. The Delectable Nights presents a gathering of Italian aristocrats who entertain themselves by telling tales. Very little indeed is known about the author. He is believed to have been born around 1485 and to have died around 1550. This edition was limited to one thousand copies, of which this is number 344. The edition is illustrated with many full colour plates and ornamental capital letters. This copy previously belonged to one Harold Nickson, whose bookplate can be found to the front pastedowns. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. In the original blue cloth with gilt borders and gilt lettering to the spines. Externally very smart indeed, with some faint marking to the boards only. The foredge of the text block is untrimmed and a little dusty as a result. With personal bookplates to the front pastedowns of both volumes. The first and last few pages of each volumes are lightly spotted as usual. Otherwise generally clean, and firmly bound. Near Fine. book.
Paris, Charles Carrington 1907. Gr.8°. 2 Bde. LXXXVII, 312 S., 371 S. und 50 kolorierte Tafeln. Dunkelgrünes Halbmaroquin (à coins, 5 nerfs) mit goldgepr. Rückentitel. Der Originalumschlag ist eingebunden. No. 404 (de 750) exemplaires sur vergé d?Arches. Rückenleder leicht blass. Sehr gutes Exemplar.
