Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 111-117. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: In Gela, rich in wheat, he died, and lies beneath this stone: Aeschylus the Athenian, son of Euphorion. His valour, tried and proved, the mead of Marathon can tell, The long-haired Persian also, who knows it all too well. Athenaios (XIV 627c) and Pausanias (I 14,5) say that Aeschylus composed this epitaph himself; the Life transmitted in the Aeschylean manuscripts says merely that the people of Gela «gave him a costly funeral in their public cemetery and honoured him magnificently, inscribing these verses», without specifying a composer. One is fully entitled to approach such traditions as these with scepticism, knowing what we know about the habits of ancient biographers, especially biographers of poets, and knowing also that this was not the only epitaph of Aeschylus circulating in antiquity. And Aeschylus is certainly not likely to have written an epitaph that specified the place of his death. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Reprint. Zustand: Gut. pp. 115-117. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: [.] Thus the text and (relevant) apparatus of Lloyd-Jones and Wilson s new Oxford edition, adding »v. varie temptatus: épéfchomai = glorior, ut ap. A. Ag. 1394«. In their companion volume Sophoclea they cite as parallels Iliad E 119, A 431 and Odyssey chi 412. They are of course aware that in all these passages épéfchomai (or its equivalent) is used of a person exulting over something that has happened, not over something that is merely in prospect; but they account for the use of the verb here by supposing that Hyllos »prospectively exult[s] over the vengeance . as though it were an accomplished fact«. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 105-110. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: Which was Oedipus elder son, Eteokles or Polyneikes? There are surprisingly few explicit statements on the matter. The earliest come in tragedies of the last decade of the fifth century, and they contradict each other. In Euripides Phoinissai (71f.) Eteokles is the elder; in Sophocles Oedipus at Kolonos (374f., 1293-5, 1422) Polyneikes is. We cannot tell from internal evidence whether one, both, or neither of these two versions is derived from earlier tradition, since each is integrated with the plot of its own play. In Phoinissai Eteokles seniority is used (69-76) to account for the fact that when the brothers agree to rule Thebes in alternate years (a story not heard of before Euripides), Eteokles is allowed to rule for the first year (at the end of which he refuses to surrender power). In Oedipus at Kolonos Polyneikes, who claimed the automatic right to succeed to Oedipus throne as his elder son (1292-4), is bitterly resentful at having been ousted and dishonoured by his younger brother, and this is one of the main reasons (1422f.) for his refusal to heed Antigone s anguished plea to him not to destroy his family and city. Two later literary or quasi-literary sources name Eteokles as the elder brother; as we shall see, however, one artistic source tells a contrary tale. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: The lyric section of the parodos of Aeschylus Agamemnon begins with a narrative (104-159) recounting an omen that appeared at the time when the expedition against Troy was being set in motion, and the interpretation of it by the prophet Kalchas, which includes a prediction of the capture of Troy (126-130, understood by everyone) and foreshadowings of the sacrifice of Iphigeneia (134-152, understood by the audience, and no doubt with hindsight by the Chorus, but by no one at the time when it was uttered) and of the murder of Agamemnon (154f., understood by the audience alone). Reprint. Zustand: Gut. pp. 432-445. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Source [118, sic!], year and author's name handwritten on 1st page, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: It has often been noted that in Seven the people and city of Thebes are never referred to by that name, but always called the people and city of Kadmos or of the Kadmeians. HUTCHINSON refuses to see any significance in this: »for the people - though not for individuals - kadmeioi or the like is in verse the normal designation«. Is he right? In the first place it should be observed that it is not only to the people of Thebes that »Kadmos«-type names are applied in Seven . The people are indeed thus designated in three passages (1,39,303); but in seven other places similar expressions are used in reference to the actual town (9,47,74,120,136,531,823), and in 543 and 679 the reference is respectively to a single individual citizen and to many individual citizens, to the total exclusion of the names [thivi, thivai, thivaios]. How does this compare with the regular practice of tragedy? We have for comparison the three Theban plays of Sophocles and the Suppliants and Phoinissai of Euripides. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 189-190. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Author's name handwritten on slightly bumped cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: In his excellent article "The Symposium at Wasps 1299 ff." I. C. Storey argues convincingly that the Phrynichos mentioned in Ar. Wasps 1302 should not be identified with the Phrynichos (PA 15011) who later became a leader of the Four Hundred, and suggests that he might be identified instead with the Phrynichos (PA 15007) who was among those arrested together with Andokides in 415, on the denunciation of Diokleides, for the mutilation of the Hermai (Andok. 1.47). Like others, however, he is sceptical of the textual soundness of the words o orchisamenos, which in the transmitted text of Andokides follow this Phrynichos name.
