Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. An attractive illustrated reprint of the Scottish privateer's biography and travelogue of Asia. Two volumes of Captain Alexander Hamilton's biography are bound in one volume in this first edition edited by Sir William Foster. With 12 facsimile plates, three maps, and five folding maps across the volume. Hamilton was a seventeenth century Scottish sea, captain, privateer, and merchant, and this biography offers lively anecdotes of encounters with pirates, poisoning in Malacca s well as providing vivid descriptions of the countries and their social customs. On his arrival in Bombay in 1688, Hamilton briefly served under the Easy India Company in a local war, then set up as a private trader. As well as providing a window into the seamen's life, the work also provides valuable insights into British involvement and perceptions of early modern Asia. In the publisher's original leatherette binding. Externally, very smart, with just the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages throughout. Very Good Indeed. book.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight damage to a corner of the second leaf. Pencil note in another hand at foot of last page. Hamilton (1781-1876), Oriental Secretary to the British Embassy at Constantinople, published 'Antar: A Bedoueen Romance' with the London publisher John Murray in 1819. The present letter therefore relates to a pre-publicity copy of the book, which Wrighte has read with 'great pleasure'. Readers are, he considers, 'much obliged to Mr. Terrick Hamilton for presenting it to the Public in such an elegant English dress'. He complains that the book 'contains but little information with respect to the domestic habits of the Arabians' and no allusion to the Red Sea (despite the fact that it 'relates to the different Tribes of Arabs in Arabia Felix, bordering on the Coasts of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf'), but finds that it has 'every mark of genuineness'. He also discusses 'the Arabic names for the Constellations' and 'the pasturing of Cattle'. The latter part of the letter concerns his son Henry. He explains that he feels 'anxiety to get him into some situation within the Church or in some civil capacity at Home or abroad', and suggests that the reason why he has not replied to Brydges's 'kind Letter concerning him', may be that he 'has been improvident and I hope is now fully sensible of it, and is perhaps ashamed to write to you'. The Gentleman's Magazine, November 1854, carries a short obituary for Wrighte.

Zustand: Very good condition. A neoclassical masterpiece from the greatest 18th century work on the arts of the ancient world by D'Hancarville, "Antiquites Etrusques, Grecques, et Romaines tirees du Cabinet du M. William Hamilton", published in Naples in 1767. This is one of only two double-page engravings of the famed Hamilton Vase, now in the British Museum. Framed within ornate patterned borders, the principal scene shows a youth standing in a small temple-like structure, with his horse and armor. Flanking the temple are two youths and two women holding objects including a helmet, shield and spear; a mirror and wreath; two offering bowls, fillet and a branch; and a ritual bucket and jug. At the right side of the engraving is a scene with two males and two females flanking a stele, most likely making offerings and paying homage to the deceased. Colored at the time, the terra cotta colored figures and highlighting in white, against the black background makes a powerful graphic statement. Sir William Hamilton was the British ambassador to Naples during the city's golden age, from 1764 to 1800. An avid antiquarian, Hamilton assembled one of the world's finest collections of Greek and Roman antiquities. The core of his collection was bought en bloc from the Porcinari family, after an introduction by Hugues d'Hancarville, an amateur art dealer. Hamilton added several more choice items before selling the entire collection to the British Museum in 1772, where it became one of the main collections in the department of Greek and Roman antiquities. However, before the collection was shipped to England, Hamilton arranged for Hugues d'Hancarville to oversee the cataloging and drawing of every item. The published work appeared in 1766-1767 and is a triumphant example of the printmakers art of the highest order. The Hamilton Vase was given star treatment in d'Hancarville's book, with no less than three single b&w and two double-page colored engravings, this being one of the colored ones. (See Jenkins & Sloan, Vases and Volcanoes, Sir William Hamilton and His Collection. British Museum: London 1996, p109 (pictured). Stunning double page engraving with original hand color and ample margins, framed sympathetically in a gilt and black wood frame. 27 x 17 1/2" in frame measuring 37 x 27".

A letter of condolence on the death of Aitken's father. Reminisces about the 'moment I came into his life', a 'luncheon at Charkley' soon after the First World War: 'The only other guest was Augustus John. [.] as you know, I learnt much from him. Indeed, it was he who taught me how to write, and in his house I met numerous people whom, but for him, I should never have known.' He considers that Beaverbrook treated him 'nobly'. He will keep the last letter he received from Beaverbrook: 'It was an original letter and, as you know, he always wanted originality in every writer and newspaper correspondent'. Beaverbrook was 'a very great and generous man' and Lockhart feels sure that his son 'will follow in his steps'. He hopes to see him, but is 'too old now to come often to London. I wish you a great future.'.

1p., on 29 x 7 cm piece of unwatermarked laid paper (probably cut down), with no indication of printer or date. Printed with the long s. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 64 lines, arranged in eight eight-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: 'BRITAIN! brave and generous nation, | Listen to my plaintive strain, | Tho' exalted be my station! | Day and night I sigh in pain; | Here I came a helpless stranger, | With no friend to take my part, | Braved the stormy ocean's danger, | From home for ever to depart.' She appeals to her 'Good Uncle' (i.e. King George III, whose wife is described as 'your Queen, a pious lady'), asking him how he can stand by and 'Let a shameless woman trample | On decency's offended laws'. (A later reference to 'the Countess' makes it clear that this is Frances Villiers, Countess of Jersey.) The last stanza reads: 'There from empty pomp retreating, | Childless mother, widow'd wife! | My lost titles none repeating, | Let me lead a peaceful life. | When you think on my sad story, | Britons, drop a pitying tear! | And fair England's fame and glory | Shall to me be ever dear!' Excessively scarce: no copy in the British Library, or on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat, and no other reference discovered. From the papers of Sir William Hamilton (1788-1877), British Consul at Boulogne-sur-Mer from 1826 to 1873.
