Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Human consciousness has perplexed philosophers, artists and scientists for centuries. Some hold it to be purely physical, while others believe it transcends the material world. Now comes a book that offers a new perspective - based entirely on evidence from the natural sciences - whereby materialism and dualism co-exist. The author - a distinguished pioneer of nonlinear dynamics - bases his argument on a hierarchical view of mental organization; a stairway. Atoms give rise to molecules, neurons form the brain and individual consciousness leads to shared culture. All steps are needed to complete the picture and each level derives from the previous one. The book shows specialists how each of their fields adds to the overall picture, while providing general readers with an introduction to this investigation.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The ECG is one of the most widely available diagnostic tests used in clinical practice today. This book is intended to build upon the topics covered in Starting to Read ECGs: The Basics thus allowing the reader to enhance their previous knowledge. Additional topics covered include a detailed look at calculating cardiac axis, an area often considered difficult to grasp, and alternative methods such as the various ways the heart rate can be calculated, the different criteria for determining LVH. Technical details about specific cardiac conditions, how to interpret pediatric ECGs, and the effect of medical devices on the ECG will also be discussed. Plentiful diagrams, tables and colour images used throughout to illustrate complex points in a simple and easy to understand way. The key facts section at the end of each chapter highlights the most important information and summary tables are provided to allow the book to be used as a quick reference guide. Each chapter will contain a mind map for revision and to aid dyslexic learners, practice questions and a few practice ECGs to consolidate the readers knowledge. The book tells the practitioner what they need to know clinically and doesn't assume any prior knowledge. It is ideal for junior doctors and clinicians, nurses, paramedics, students and health care professionals involved in the recording of 12-lead ECGs.

Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - It has been suggested that the big questions of science are answered - that science has entered a 'twilight age' where all the important knowledge is known and only the details need mopping up. And yet, the unprecedented progress in science and technology in the twentieth century has raised qu- tions that weren't conceived of a century ago. This book argues that, far from being nearlycomplete, the storyof sciencehas many morechapters, yet unwritten. With the perspective of the century's advance, it's as if we have climbed a mountain and can see just how much broader the story is. Instead of asking how an apple falls from a tree, as Isaac Newton did in the17thcentury,wecannowask:Whatisthefundamentalnatureofanapple (matter) How does an apple (biological organism) form and grow Whence came the breeze that blew it loose (meteorology) What in a physical sense (synaptic rings) was the idea that Newton had, and how did it form A new approach to science that can answer such questions has sprung up in the past 30 years. This approach - known as nonlinear science-ismore than a new eld. Put simply, it is the recognition that throughout nature, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Unexpected things happen.

Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Arguably the most intricate dynamic object in the universe, the human brain is an unsounded source of wonder for the scienti c community. The primary aim of this book is to provide both students and established - vestigators in the growing area of neuroscience with an appreciation of the roles that mathematics may play in helping to understand this en- maticorgan. Alongwithdiscussionsofresultsobtainedbytheneuroscience community, emphasis is placed on suggesting fruitful research problems for those planning to embark on mathematical studies in neuroscience. To make the overall perspectives understandable to philosophers and psychologists, essential features of the discussions are presented in ordinary English, with more detailed mathematical comments in appendices and footnotes. Although it attempts to maintain both clarity and biological relevance, this is not a text on the anatomy of nerve systems; thus readers should bring some knowledge of neurophysiology through other courses, associated studies, or laboratory research. It is a guiding theme throughout the book that the brain is organized into several quite di erent levels of dynamic activity. As will be seen, these levels are hierarchically structured, beginning with the molecular dynamics ofintrinsicmembraneproteinsandproceedingupward,throughtheswit- ing properties of active membrane patches and synapses, the emergence of impulses on active bers, overall properties of individual neurons, and the growth of functional assemblies of interacting neurons, to the global - namics of a brain. At each level of description, reality turns di erent facets of her mystery to us, and diverse phenomena make their contributions to the brain's collective behavior.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - It was just over ten years ago, at Aspeniisgarden near Gothenburg, Sweden, that Pro fessor Alexandr Sergeevich Davydov presented his soliton theory for the storage and transport of biological energy in protein to scientists from Europe, North America and Japan. Since then, his ideas have been vigorously studied and investigated throughout the world. Many feel that Davydov's theory is an important contribution to biomolecu lar dynamics, but others caution that neglected dispersive effects may destroy the energy localization that arises ill his theory. It was to discuss these differences of opinion that we organized a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on 'Self-trapping of Vibrational Energy in Protein' from July 30 to August 5, 1989 at Hanstholm, Denmark. In addition to substantial financial support from the Special Programme on 'Chaos; Order and Patterns' of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, we received it generous grant from the Danish Natural Science Research Council. We also acknowledge invalu able assistance provided by the interdepartmental center of nonlinear studies ('MIDIT' is the Danish acronym) as well as the Laboratory of Applied Mathematical Physics, both at the Technical University of Denmark. It is a particular pleasure to thank Lise Gudmandsen and Dorthe Th Ct. gersen for many forms of assistance before, during, and after the workshop.
