Softcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Edition. 44 p. 23 cm. Frontispiece and 3 other colour plates. 4 full page plates in b&w (including a 2-page spread towards rear) and other smaller in text b&w drawings by Rackham. Paper covers in mylar-covered matching dustjacket. A little light soiling to jacket and some wrinkling to covers underneath. Browning's poem, based on a medieval German legend, was first published in 1842. Who better than Arthur Rackham to illustrate the rats that bedevil the town of Hamelin, the magician who promises to remove them, and the disaster that befalls the town when the council refuses to pay his fee? His imaginative depiction of the Pied Piper makes this strange tale even more bizarre.
