The Moralia brings Christian mysticism, asceticism, dogma and allegory to bear on the story of Job's suffering. Pope Gregory marshaled Scripture alone to compose this massive commentary, which bridged the ancient and medieval worlds and remained a preeminent guide to moral theology through the Enlightenment. Gering and Rembolt reshaped this encyclopedic commentary for young scholars and busy clerics keen on ready-reference by adding two apparatuses. The first of their innovative indices provides access to all the Bible verses referenced or quoted in Gregory's commentary - some 1500 entries in all. The second is topical, with over 300 entries on the natural world - animals, serpents, metals, herbs, woods, stars, human body parts, precious gems, wind, rivers, shadow, etc. - and on man-made objects. For the text, Gering and Rembolt used the 1475 Rome edition, which includes Bp. Domenico de' Dominicis letter to Pope Sixtus IV stating that 300 copies were printed by three men in three months (here on AA1r). Two copies in U.S. libraries. In good condition (a few pale scattered stains and minor worming, loss of six sorts on the title verso), a handful of contemporary annotations, manuscript title inscription Ex biblioteca S[anc]tae Crucis Viridariensis 1669. Seow, Job 1-21: Interpretation and Commentary 193; Manitius, Geschichte der lateinischen Literatur des Mittelalters I: 97I; BMC VIII: 29; ISTC ig00431000; Goff G-431. Late 17th- or early 18th-century mottled calf (worn, slightly wormed, crown repaired), spine and label gilt, edges sprinkled red.

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Small folio. ½ p. on bifolium. With autograph address. Mounted in papered frame (357 x 246 mm). In Italian. Rare letter to King Charles IX of France, referring to a previous audience of Charles's ambassador to the Holy See, Charles d'Angennes de Rambouillet, archbishop of Mans. The topic of the long audience had been the "preservation" of unspecified help that the Pope "willingly brought to the King", most likely reinforcements to the Catholic army in the French Wars of Religion. Pius announces that d'Angennes will write the King in detail and that his nuncio in France will ask for an audience with Charles. The letter in full: "Carissimo in Christo fili salutem et Apostolicum benedictionem. - The French Wars of Religion had flared up again in 1568 with the Third Civil War, which lasted until 1570. Just a few weeks before the audience of the ambassador with the Pope, Charles's Catholic army, supported by troops from Spain and the Papal State, were defeated in the Battle of La Roche-l'Abeille on 25 June 1569. On 3 October 1569, the Catholic forces won the Battle of Montcour but Charles, on the verge of bankruptcy, would still be forced to sign the Peace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye on 8 August 1570 that guaranteed specific rights and responsibilities to the French Huguenots. Two years later, Charles gained lasting notoriety for his ambiguous role in the St Bartholomew's Day massacre against the Huguenots that violently ended the fragile religious peace. - Traces of folds and seal. With added date "2 aoust 1569" in French to the address (twice). Some browning and minor stains. Several tears to the paper border.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. 4to. 316p including engraved allegorical title by Jacques Callot. 5 fine historiated woodcut initials with martial themes and numerous decorative initials. Contemporary vellum; neatly rebacked. The statutes of the knightly order of St Stephen founded in 1562 by Cosimo de Medici, first grand duke of Tuscany, and including the amendments made under his successors Cosimo II, and Ferdinand II. As Cosimo I had conquered both Florence and later Siena on the eve of St Stephen's day (2nd August), he established a military order in honour of the Saint to employ the new aristocracy of his aggrandized state to defend it against the marauding Barbary pirates. Pope Pius IV willingly agreed to declare the duke grand master of the new order which obliged the knights to protect the Christian faith against the infidel on land and by sea. Its device was a variant of the Maltese Cross worn on a gilt chain. The order won fame under Cosimo II, when its war-galleys captured Bona, the chief port of the Barbary pirates in 1607, and for its defeat of the Turkish fleet in the following year. These victories enhanced the prestige of the duke as grand master, and the rules of the order were printed with great care, and including 24 pages of chapter and subject indexes at the end. The fine engraved title by Jacques Callot shows 4 Turkish prisoners (2 in chains) with trophies of arms and flags; on high 3 allegorical figures representing Justice, Religion, and Force, the figure of Religion carries a shield and flag emblazoned with the arms of the Order - see Lieure 372 (2) & Meaume 428 (2). Edges of right blank title margin a little foxed with traces of wear in tailend corner, otherwise a fresh copy with occasional neat marginal notes in ink in an early hand.
