Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. Hardback. Oblong 4to. [1816-1844]. London: ÅUnpaginated, pp 36. Full red morocco, blind-tooled near extremities of covers, blocked scrolls to front cover. Central blocked oval around bright gilt lettering, 'Parish Apprentices', with blocked 'Poor Law Commission' on front cover. Extremities somewhat rubbed; minor rubbing and scratches to covers. Small decorative contemporary label of I. Green, bookseller, printer and bookbinder of Droitwich, on front pastedown. Prelim before title page apparently removed; creases and small area of loss near corner of title page, final leaf torn with half of it missing, else a pleasing copy with bright covers and about VG. A scarce survival of an unused volume designed to document the care of nine- and ten-year-old orphans and other children in the first half of the nineteenth century. The Poor Law Commission oversaw the children's apprenticeship to various trades. Some children learnt husbandry or housewifery on farms, or in private houses and shops. Many parish apprentices were used as unpaid servants and were treated badly The 'Register' has a standard printed format, with ruling on each page for recording the apprentice's name, age, sex, parents' names and address, the 'person to whom bound or assigned', their trade and address, terms of the apprenticeship etc This title appears as no. 40 in 'Miscellaneous Books and Forms' in Shaw & Sons' 'List of Books and Forms for Poor Law Unions'. The list is included in Shaw & Sons' 'Justice of the Peace and County, Borough, Poor Law Union, and Parish Law Recorder', Vol.1, 1837 (edited by Eagle and Jellicoe). This 'Register' was published between 1816 (when the law was amended, as given on the title page) and 1844, when compulsory apprenticeship was abolished.
