With a map and numerous vignette illustrations throughout. Written by Samuel Griswold Goodrich, who wrote under the pseudonym Peter Parley. Born in Connecticut, U.S.A, Goodrich was largely self-educated, who began as a bookseller and publisher in 1816. The volume itself is slightly worn, yet remains a good reading copy. In original pictorial paper covered binding. Externally, somewhat rubbed and worn with backstrip missing and both joints strained. Faint previous owner's inscription to recto of front free endpaper. Internally, binding slightly strained in places. Foxing to first and last couple of pages but otherwise generally bright and clean. Fair. book.

Externally sound, though with marks to the boards and splitting to the cloth on the front joint. Internally, generally furmly bound although slightly strained in places. Samuel Griswold Goodrich, best known by his pseudonym 'Peter Parley', was a renowned American publisher and author of children"s books. He began publishing under the name of Peter Parley in 1827 with a series of books for the young, which focused on geography, biography, history, science, and general miscellaneous tales. This work is copiously illustrated throughout with charming in-text illustrations. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding, with elaborate gilt and black stamped design to the boards and gilded page edges. In the publisher's original embellished cloth binding. Externally very smart, with minor shelfwear to extremities and head and tail of spine and the odd mark to boards. Slight bumping to head of spine. Slight fading to cloth of spine. Hinges slightly split and strained, but reasonably firm. Prior owner's pencil inscription to front free-endpaper and half title page. INternally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean, with just the odd light spot to the occasional page. Small ink mark to fore edge of final page and rear free-endpaper, not affecting text. Very Good Indeed. book.
