VII, 297 pp.First edition of a French-Japanese dictionary written by Edmond Papinot (b. 1860), an apostolic missionary. The goal of Papinot's work was to give summary information on the principal names that can be found in the history and geography of Japan. He includes the names and genealogy of all the emperors and empresses of Japan, the nengo, the names of the mountains higher than 2000 meters, the most important rivers and cities of more than 20,000 inhabitants, but also a list of the shogun, a genealogy of the Taira, Minamoto, Ashikaga, Tokugawa, a tabel of buddhist sectes, a list of the provinces and departments, the signs and elements of the zodiac, and a table of the months and seasons.
