Zustand: Very Good. Four typescripts on Palekh icon painting from the Venetia Newall collection. No author or date. Talk One is entitled ' Concerning Old Palekh'; talk two is entitled ' Concerning Palekh Icon-painting : its Styles and Techniques'; article three is entitled ' How the Palekh Master-Craftsmen Understood the Stylistic Peculiarities of Seventeenth Century Stroganov Painting, and How they Used it in Their Icon-Painting'; the fourth article is entitled ' Other Styles in which Icon-painters also Worked'.' Concerning Old Palekh ', which like the other three scripts , seems to be a translation, is a semi-autobiographical account by an unidentified master craftsman of the ancient art of icon painting as practiced in the town of Palekh in central Russia. 'Concerning Palekh Icon-painting' focuses on the technical side of icon-painting. The first of the other two articles deals with the influence of Stroganov painting on the Palekh style, while the second is a stylistic analysis of Palekh Fryazhsky painting. Venetia Newall (1935 - 2017 ) was an acclaimed folklorist whose most famous book was An Egg for Easter. She may have translated all four articles from the Russian. She is known to have collected icons and was a noted linguist. It is not known where the two talks were delivered or if the two articles were ever published. The items. All are top copies of typescripts that have been stapled together through the left-hand margin. There are about 8 minor handwritten corrsctions to the typed text. There is no pagination, but according to an inscription in pencil on the envelope containing them, the total number of words is approximately 4,800.All four scripts are in excellent condition.
