St. Petersburg 1855. A four-page letter to Mr. J.S. Burrows Esq in Hong Kong, 13.5 x 20.5 cm., single folded sheet, opens to [4] pages, dated, signed, very clean, solid item, printed on black-outlined writing paper, a lithograph. OBSCURE ITEM! *** *** *** . . . A LITHOGRAPHIC COPY OF A HAND-PENNED PERIOD LETTER . . * This is a fascinating hand-written 1855 letter from Count Carl Robert Nesselrode, a Russian Diplomat, requesting comfort and aid for the survivors of the "S.S. DIANA," a British ship that sunk in waters near-by Hong Kong, to Silas Enoch Burrows, an American ship owner, working in Hong Kong, in 1855. . . . WHO WAS COUNT CARL ROBERT NESSLERODE [1780-1862]: . Count Nasserite, was a Baltic-German, also known as Charles de Nasserite, born Lisbon, Portugal, 1780 -died in Saint Petersburg, Russia, 1862. . He was Russian Imperial diplomat of German descent, known as Karl Vasilyevich Nasserite. His mother was Jewish by origin and Protestant by faith. For forty years [1816-1856] Nasserite as foreign minister guided Russian policy, he was a leading European conservative statesman of the "Holy Alliance." . His father [d.1810], was a count of the Holy Roman Empire, was the ambassador of the Russian Emperor. In deference to his mother's Protestantism he was baptized in the chapel of the British Embassy, thus becoming a member of the Church of England and not the Russian Orthodox Church. Nesselrode's Germanic roots were emphasized by his education in a Berlin gymnasium, his father having been appointed ambassador to the Prussian court about 1787. . Nasserite was intimately involved with the Russian rapprochement with Britain, in 1836-1844. Between 1845 and 1856, he served as Chancellor. As Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1824, he was a plenipotentiary during negotiations with the United States in defining the boundary between Russian America and the American claims known as the Oregon Country, which was resolved with the Russo-American Treaty of 1824, and a parallel treaty with Britain concerning British claims which overlapped on those of the U.S. A century later in 1924, Mount Nasserite in the Boundary Ranges of the Alaska-British Columbia boundary was named for him. . One frequently overlooked facet of his activity involved Nesselrode's attempts to penetrate Japan's self-isolation. In 1853 he dispatched Vice-Admiral Yevfimy Putyatin with a letter to the Shogun; Putyatin returned to St. Petersburg with the favorable Treaty of Shimoda." . The above liberally quoted from Wikipedia below, please see more for his fascinating biography and history. . See us for books about Putyatin, Commodore Matthew C. Perry, and the American & Russian opening and treaties with Japan, 1852-1854, 1855. . *** . THE LETTER FROM COUNT NESSLERODE WRITTEN TO SILAS ENOCH BURROWS READS : . "St. Petersbourg [sic] Mai.12.1855. . Dear Mr. Burrows, Your obliging letter, dated Hong Kong March 15th [1855] reached me a few days ago, via Hamburg [a ship] The intelligence it conveys to me about the loss of the "Dianna" is very sad; but at the same time, we must acknowledge with a deep feeling of gratitude the . J.S. BURROWS ESQ HONG KONG s.s. . Page 2: merciful protraction of Divine Providence, for having saved from destruction our gallant offices and crew. . I beg to assure you that the readiness you have shown in their behalf, is highly appre- ciated by H.G.st's Government. I did not fail to inform Vice-Admiral Poutiatine of your obliging effort. It remains entirely reserved to his own . Page 3: decision whither he might avail himself of your kind assistance, and to what extent, according to circumstances. It is to be expected that, in the mean while, this highly distinguished officer, has taken immediate measures in order to provide for the safety and comfort of the crew, under his command. However, should he think proper to apply to you, Dear Sir, on the subject, . Page 4: I am quite sure, you will have the kindness to afford him every assistance, in your power, at his request. . . On my own part, I feel most particularly obliged to you, Dear Mr. Burrow, for your kind attention and remembrance; it is with great pleasure I avail myself of this opportunity to offer to you, dear Sir, the reassured assurance of my distinguished esteem and regard." . [Flamboyantly Signed] . Nesselrodes" . *** WHO WAS SILAS ENOCH BURROWS [1794-1870] . THE ADDRESSEE OF THE LETTER: . It is believed that Silas B. Burrows, an American, was a shipping agent for the British ship "S.S. Diana" in Hong Kong, or otherwise the responsible person for attending to and providing comfort for the destroyed ship's surviving crew members. . In that vein, when Count Nesselrodes learned the ship sadly "went down." The survivors were kept under Burrows care. It is very clear from Count Nesselrodes's comment above where her refers to ".having saved.our gallant offices and crew" that these survivors were more than likely Russians. . It is therefore in the interest of Russia's top diplomat to diplomatically request assistance from Burrows to those who were rescued. Though it was implied in the letter that Burrows was under no legal obligation to render such assistance, food and shelter, in spite of that, Count Nesselrodes politely requests help from Burrows on a "moral" basis, a kind of "diplomatic move." Burrows also displays a "willingness" to provide care and assistance to the crew. . THE RUSSIAN SHIP: "S.S. DIANA:" The "S.S. Diana" was a 52 gun Russian frigate, according to the citations below under "Lloyds Register of British Ships" and the Wikipedia article. . Quoting from Wikipedia about the "S.S.DIANA:" "Diana was a frigate of the Imperial Russian Navy. She was built in 1853, and was the flagship of the Russian explorer Yevfimy Putyatin when he visited Japan in 1854. . Putyatin's fleet was damaged in a Ttsunami, following the powerful Ansei-Tokai earthquake of 23 December 1854. Diana sank in the bay of Miyajima-mura [modern Fuji-shi], while sailing from Shimoda.
