Hardback. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. None (illustrator). An excellent limited edition copy of James Whistler's lecture on the purpose of art, and the philosophy of "art for art's sake". Limited edition copy with glassine cover, limited to three hundred copies. The first book by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, an American artist based primarily in the UK, working during the "Gilded Age" in America. Hailed by Oscar Wilde as a 'masterpiece', Whistler's text serves as a major expression of his belief in the theory "art for art's sake". Opposed to the predominant Victorian notion that art must serve a social or moral function, within this lecture Whistler proposed that art should rather exist for its own end, and not attempt to moralize. Whistler repeatedly applied this belief to his own paintings, and has often been heralded as the leading proponent of this artistic philosophy. In the original quarter vellum paper binding with tan boards. Externally, very attractive condition with minor shelfwear. Gilt title to front board and spine. Complete with publisher's glassine book cover, sunned with slight bumping and tearing at head and tail of spine, and slight spotting. Small closed tear to the head of rear wrap, no larger than 2cm. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Printed 'on English hand-made paper',with some pages uncut at the top edge, and text within red-ruled borders. Fine. book.

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of James Whistler's account of the Eden versus Whistler French legal case surrounding a painting. The first edition of this work. This work is James Whistler's account of the French legal case Eden versus Whistler. The case surrounded a painting that Sir William Eden paid for of his wife, Lady Eden, which Whistler has painted. Whistler took the money, and exhibited the work in Paris, refusing to deliver it. When Eden instigated legal proceedings, Whistle returned the money, and scrapped the figure out of the painting, replacing it with another, so that if he lost the case, the painting couldn't be recovered. After a couple of appeals, Whistler was granted the picture. Whistler was an American artist, who was known for his paintings during the American Gilded Age. In the original publisher's quarter cloth with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light marking to the boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the occasional mark. Very Good. book.

Erstausgabe
First edition, first impression, one of 400 trade issue copies; a further 100 demy octavo copies were also issued. Despite beginning as friends, the relationship between Wilde and Whistler descended into a bitter dispute as each sought to assert himself as spokesman for the aesthetic movement. Following the accusations of plagiarism, philistinism, and indecency, this book records the accusations and retorts made by two of the wittiest literary figures to engage in hostilities. Provenance: Contemporary telegram from Heffers of Cambridge to Wilde collector and correspondent of Robert Ross Charles Glidden Osborne loosely inserted. Later purchased by book dealer and co-founder of the Society for Theatre Research Ifan Kyrle Fletcher, with his neat pencil notes on the front wrapper, and housed in an envelope addressed to him. Sold by Fletcher to Helen Hambro, née Boyson (1936-2004), an editorial assistant for the Society's Theatre Notebook, and bought from the Hambro estate. Mason 626. Small quarto. Original brown paper wrappers printed in black. With a postal envelope addressed to bookseller Ifan Kyrle Fletcher. Some loss to spine, wrappers soiled, nicks to extremities, contents foxed; a very good copy of this fragile publication.
