Melbourne : Macmillan, 2007. Quarto, purple lettered black cloth in illustrated dustjacket, pp. 255, extensively illustrated. New copy of an out of print title. Fred Cress is a Sydney artist who divides his time between Australia and rural France, where he maintains a second studio. He is a keen student of human nature. While his quizzical gaze detects the subjects - those who flirt, chase, dance, banquet and otherwise engage in the whole gamut of human affairs - his drawing skills, honed over five decades, provide the means of recording them on paper or canvas. This book is about drawing, and about the artist's use of drawing to capture multiple nuances of human behaviour. Cress is an Australian artist who subscribes to the tradition of artists like Rembrandt and Goya who sought to express aspects of the human condition as they saw it in their times. The more than 900 drawings reproduced in this book are arranged in series which date from the 1950s to the present.

Melbourne : Badger Editions, 2021. Quarto (310 x 253 mm), laminated pictorial boards in illustrated dust jacket, pp. 448, extensively illustrated. Text by Ken McGregor, designed and edited by Jenny Zimmer. Printed in an edition of 1000 copies. New copy. Printed and produced entirely in Australia. Destined to be regarded as the most authoritative, thoroughly researched and most comprehensively illustrated monograph on Namatjira for years to come, Ken McGregor's eagerly-awaited The life and times of Albert Namatjira is an insightful study of the man and his art, produced in close consultation with the Namatjira family and Namatjira Legacy Trust. The substantial text (which includes photographic illustrations) occupies the first 170 pages, and follows Namatjira from his early life at Hermannsburg and his ostracism for marrying a woman of the wrong skin group, to his association with Rex Battarbee and the development of a distinctive painting style which led to his first solo exhibition in Melbourne in 1938; it investigates the artist's response to public acclaim and the consequences that ensued from commercial success, his struggles against bureaucracy and exploitation, and the sadness and alienation of his final days at Morris Soak. The next 250 pages illustrate over 450 works from across Namatjira's career chronologically (many of the key works are illustrated full-page) in three discrete sections: Catalogue of Works of the 1930s; Catalogue of Works of the 1940s; Catalogue of Works of the 1950s. These stunning colour plates are followed by two short chapters, Solo Exhibitions and Selected Group Exhibitions. There is also a bibliography and an index. 'The words in this book are not written from a white man's perspective nor a black man's perspective, they are a truthful account of a very talented man living and working at a particular time in history' - from the Foreword by Mervyn Rubuntja, Chairman, Iltja Ntjarra Art Centre and Independent Director, Namatjira Legacy Trust, Alice Springs. 'Albert Namatjira is the reason non-Indigenous Australians started to recognise the work of Aboriginal artists. His paintings have become synonymous with our vision of the Australian outback, and he must be credited with pioneering contemporary Indigenous art.' (Ken McGregor) Note: Profits from the sale of this book will go to support the Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre, Alice Springs.
Ken McGregor ; with German translation by Sybille Prou. Melbourne : Thames & Hudson, 2017. Quarto, illustrated boards, pp. 311, illustrated. Text in English and German. 'Blek le Rat is known worldwide for the quirky ideas and radical politics he has brought to his art form - stencilled street art. His paintings are autobiographical, born of his personal experience, and his art has inspired the post-graffiti street artists who have followed. After stencilling provocative images in major cities throughout the world, he now lives in a small town outside of Paris and maintains his presence on the street by pasting up posters. He has worked on the walls of the biggest museums in the world and the streets of the cities in which we live for almost four decades and many art historians have acknowledged him as the leader of the stencilled street art movement. This copiously illustrated book, with hundreds of stencilled images reproduced in colour, traces Blek Le Rat's entire career to date. This book provides a detailed biography of the artist and traces the extension of his art to the works on paper and canvas now exhibited in art galleries throughout the world.' - the publisher.

Melbourne : Macmillan Art, 2007. Octavo, boards in dustjacket, pp. 142, illustrated. Macmillan Mini-Art Series number 4. Tim Storrier has painted sites in Egypt, Africa, Turkey and the West coast of America. Earning the respect of the art world in 1968 at nineteen by being the youngest ever recipient of the Sulman Prize, he collected it again in 1984. This book explores Storrier's themes and captures him painting in the studio or preparing a 'blaze-line' to be lit under a vast outback sky. Apart from the more familiar themes, in this book there are paintings that are lesser-known and expected to surprise.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. South Yarra, Macmillan Art Publishing, 2005 [presumed first edition, second printing] (printed in China, with the printed dedication 'For Tessa and Cassandra | & | Tim, Louise and Jane' and ISBN 1 876832 23 1). Folio, two volumes, 256 and 257-264 pages with over 430 colour illustrations plus an original etching in the first volume. Ochre cloth blocked in black; faint odour of camphor; a fine set with only the first volume in a matching cloth slipcase (but as issued). Number 42 of 70 copies of this deluxe issue; bound in at the front of the book is an original etching ('Emu Spring', sheet size 340 × 245 mm), numbered, captioned, dated (2005) and signed by John Olsen, who has additionally dated (2006) and signed the conjugate leaf. Curiously, this etching does not appear in the catalogue raisonné (presumably because it was produced after the book had gone to print, but its title does say 'His Complete Graphics, 1957-2005' .). Even more curiously, the slim second volume here contains only the continuously paginated 'Chronological List of Works', the 'Index of Subjects', and 'Glossary of Printing Terms' that are bound in at the end of the one-volume standard issue (and the height of the second volume is identical to the height of the slipcase on the first volume, which means the books themselves are of differing heights). A deluxe issue of the first printing was produced (also with an etching), as was a special 'presentation issue' of 20 copies (each with an original drawing or watercolour). This important catalogue raisonné was compiled in consultation with John Olsen and Jeffrey Makin. [2 items].

South Yarra, Macmillan Art Publishing, 2005 [presumed first edition, second printing] (printed in China, with the printed dedication 'For Tessa and Cassandra | & | Tim, Louise and Jane' and ISBN 1 876832 23 1). Folio, 264 pages with over 430 colour illustrations plus an original signed ink drawing and signed photograph. Blue-grey papered boards blocked in silver; spine a little rubbed; odour of camphor; a near-fine copy in the fine cloth-bound slipcase. Number 7 of one of two series of 10 copies of the 'special presentation' issue, signed by John Olsen, with an original signed ink drawing (130 × 208 mm) and an original signed photograph of the artist at work (210 × 135 mm) tipped in to a plain card portfolio tipped in on the front free endpaper. The colophon (printed on a leaflet mounted on the verso of the rear free endpaper) indicates that this issue was released in 2014 (surprisingly using the sheets of the second printing of the first edition, not the revised second edition of 2011). Deluxe issues of the first and second printings were also produced (70 copies each with a different original etching for each printing). This important catalogue raisonné was compiled in consultation with John Olsen and Jeffrey Makin.
