Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Books are still among the most important cultural achievements of humanity. Their invention was as important as the Internet: for the first time, a mass transfer of information became possible. Education, science, research, but also entertainment was based on a new revolutionary basis. Books are changing society until today. The technical possibilities of mass printing led to a radical increase in titles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the conditions were still very different than today: Who wrote a book at that time, often wrote a life's work. This is reflected in the high quality of old books.Unfortunately, books age. Paper is not made for eternity. Therefore, we have made it our mission to preserve the book of knowledge of humanity and to make old books available in high quality at low prices 84 pp. Englisch.

Nebst kurzer Uebersicht einiger neu entdecker und beobachteter Doppelsterne und Nebelflecken. Johann Philipp Erie, Hamburg 1836. (4)+116 pages. Last leaf with a tear, but with new paper put in and the missing text handwritten in neat hand. Bound in a paper binding with blind tooled title to the spine and leather reenforcements to the top and bottom of the spine. * Amusing book on 'The Great Moon Hoax': In 1835, New York newspaper The Sun published a series of highly extraorinary discoveries made by a newly built giant telescope in Cape Town. You could clearly see the inhabitants of the moon: Unicorns, bisons and the humanoid bat-men on the surface. Well, it was revealed as a hoax later in 1835, but not until the story had spread to Europe and spawned off books like this one.

2 Bll., 116 SS. Kl.-8vo. Orig.-Brosch. Broschur etwas eselsohrig, sauber.

Erstausgabe
28pp. Uncut. First edition in book form. First edition in book form. 28pp. Uncut. The 1835 Great Moon Hoax was prompted by a series of six articles published in the New York newspaper The Sun, about the supposed discovery of life and even civilization on the Moon. The present pamphlet is the first publication in book form of those articles. Authorship of the hoax is generally attributed to Richard Adams Locke, a reporter at the Sun who had edited Poe's "Lunar Discoveries." at the Southern Literary Messenger just months earlier. "This fabulous account of flora and fauna on the surface of the moon originally appeared as a 'news story' in the New York Sun in August and September in 1835 under the title 'Discoveries in the Moon lately made at the Cape of Good Hope by Sir John Herschel.' Purportedly based on a news release by the Royal Society, the story achieved short-lived credibility by describing the construction and working of a powerful telescope"--Lilly Library, Science Fiction and Fantasy, page 12. Stitched. Toned, small hole in final two leaves with minimal loss. Provenance: James D. Smillie (signature at top of first page).
