Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This self-contained work on Hilbert space operators takes a problem-solving approach to the subject, combining theoretical results withawide variety ofexercises that range from thestraightforward to the state-of-the-art. Complete solutions to allproblems are provided. The text covers the basics of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space and gradually progresses to more advanced topics in spectral theory and quasireducible operators. Written in a motivating and rigorous style, the work has few prerequisites beyond elementary functional analysis, and will appeal to graduate students and researchers in mathematics, physics, engineering, and related disciplines.

Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - By a Hilbert-space operator we mean a bounded linear transformation be tween separable complex Hilbert spaces. Decompositions and models for Hilbert-space operators have been very active research topics in operator theory over the past three decades. The main motivation behind them is the in variant subspace problem: does every Hilbert-space operator have a nontrivial invariant subspace This is perhaps the most celebrated open question in op erator theory. Its relevance is easy to explain: normal operators have invariant subspaces (witness: the Spectral Theorem), as well as operators on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces (witness: canonical Jordan form). If one agrees that each of these (i. e. the Spectral Theorem and canonical Jordan form) is important enough an achievement to dismiss any further justification, then the search for nontrivial invariant subspaces is a natural one; and a recalcitrant one at that. Subnormal operators have nontrivial invariant subspaces (extending the normal branch), as well as compact operators (extending the finite-dimensional branch), but the question remains unanswered even for equally simple (i. e. simple to define) particular classes of Hilbert-space operators (examples: hyponormal and quasinilpotent operators). Yet the invariant subspace quest has certainly not been a failure at all, even though far from being settled. The search for nontrivial invariant subspaces has undoubtly yielded a lot of nice results in operator theory, among them, those concerning decompositions and models for Hilbert-space operators. This book contains nine chapters.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume comprises a carefully selected collection of articles emerging from and pertinent to the 2010 CFL-80 conference in Rio de Janeiro, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition. A major result in the field of numerical analysis, the CFL condition has influenced the research of many important mathematicians over the past eight decades, and this work is meant to take stock of its most important and current applications. The Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) Condition: 80 Years After its Discovery will be of interest to practicing mathematicians, engineers, physicists, and graduate students who work with numerical methods.

Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This text covers a first course in bilinear maps and tensor products intending to bring the reader from the beginning of functional analysis to the frontiers of exploration with tensor products. Tensor products, particularly in infinite-dimensional normed spaces, are heavily based on bilinear maps. The author brings these topics together by using bilinear maps as an auxiliary, yet fundamental, tool for accomplishing a consistent, useful, and straightforward theory of tensor products. The author's usual clear, friendly, and meticulously prepared exposition presents the material in ways that are designed to make grasping concepts easier and simpler. The approach to the subject is uniquely presented from an operator theoretic view. An introductory course in functional analysis is assumed. In order to keep the prerequisites as modest as possible, there are two introductory chapters, one on linear spaces (Chapter 1) and another on normed spaces (Chapter 5), summarizing the background material required for a thorough understanding. The reader who has worked through this text will be well prepared to approach more advanced texts and additional literature on the subject. The book brings the theory of tensor products on Banach spaces to the edges of Grothendieck's theory, and changes the target towards tensor products of bounded linear operators. Both Hilbert-space and Banach-space operator theory are considered and compared from the point of view of tensor products. This is done from the first principles of functional analysis up to current research topics, with complete and detailed proofs. The first four chapters deal with the algebraic theory of linear spaces, providing various representations of the algebraic tensor product defined in an axiomatic way. Chapters 5 and 6 give the necessary background concerning normed spaces and bounded bilinear mappings. Chapter 7 is devoted to the study of reasonable crossnorms on tensor product spaces, discussing in detail the important extreme realizations of injective and projective tensor products. In Chapter 8 uniform crossnorms are introduced in which the tensor products of operators are bounded; special attention is paid to the finitely generated situation. The concluding Chapter 9 is devoted to the study of the Hilbert space setting and the spectral properties of the tensor products of operators. Each chapter ends with a section containing 'Additional Propositions' and suggested readings for further studies.

Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Classical in its approach, this textbook is thoughtfully designed and composed in two parts. Part I is meant for a one-semester beginning graduate course in measure theory, proposing an 'abstract' approach to measure and integration, where the classical concrete cases of Lebesgue measure and Lebesgue integral are presented as an important particular case of general theory. Part II of the text is more advanced and is addressed to a more experienced reader. The material is designed to cover another one-semester graduate course subsequent to a first course, dealing with measure and integration in topological spaces. The final section of each chapter in Part I presents problems that are integral to each chapter, the majority of which consist of auxiliary results, extensions of the theory, examples, and counterexamples. Problems which are highly theoretical have accompanying hints. The last section of each chapter of Part II consists of Additional Propositions containing auxiliary and complementary results. The entire book contains collections of suggested readings at the end of each chapter in order to highlight alternate approaches, proofs, and routes toward additional results. With modest prerequisites, this text is intended to meet the needs of a contemporary course in measure theory for mathematics students and is also accessible to a wider student audience, namely those in statistics, economics, engineering, and physics. Part I may be also accessible to advanced undergraduates who fulfill the prerequisites which include an introductory course in analysis, linear algebra (Chapter 5 only), and elementary set theory.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This contemporary first course focuses on concepts and ideas of Measure Theory, highlighting the theoretical side of the subject. Its primary intention is to introduce Measure Theory to a new generation of students, whether in mathematics or in one of the sciences, by offering them on the one hand a text with complete, rigorous and detailed proofs--sketchy proofs have been a perpetual complaint, as demonstrated in the many Amazon reader reviews critical of authors who "omit 'trivial' steps" and "make not-so-obvious 'it is obvious' remarks." On the other hand, Kubrusly offers a unique collection of fully hinted problems. On the other hand, Kubrusly offers a unique collection of fully hinted problems. The author invites the readers to take an active part in the theory construction, thereby offering them a real chance to acquire a firmer grasp on the theory they helped to build. These problems, at the end of each chapter, comprise complements and extensions of the theory, further examples and counterexamples, or auxiliary results. They are an integral part of the main text, which sets them apart from the traditional classroom or homework exercises. JARGON BUSTER: measure theory Measure theory investigates the conditions under which integration can take place. It considers various ways in which the "size" of a set can be estimated. This topic is studied in pure mathematics programs but the theory is also foundational for students of statistics and probability, engineering, and financial engineering. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
