Erstausgabe
1. Blind stamped orig. cloth (13,5 x 20,5 cm). Spine gilt stamped. Subtitle: To which is prefixed, a geographical memoir of Abyssinia and south-eastern Africa, by James M'Queen, Esq. Grounded on the missionaries' journals, and the expedition of the Pacha of Egypt up the Nile. The whole illustrated by two maps, engraved by Arrowsmith. First edition. - In 1829 the Church Missionary Society began operations in the African kingdom of Abyssinia (Ethiopia). The Anglican clergyman Charles Isenberg (1806-64) joined the mission there in 1835, followed by Johann Ludwig Krapf (1810-81) in 1837. Soon afterwards, opposition to the Society's presence in Abyssinia caused them to leave. However, they were determined to establish a base in the central Ethiopian kingdom of Shoa (Shewa), and did so in 1839, entering from the Yemeni port of Mocha. Isenberg stayed in the capital, Ankobar, from 7 June until 6 November 1839, while Krapf remained until 1842 and travelled to other, lesser-known parts of the country. This work, published in 1843, is an account of their period of missionary activity, told through their journals. It begins with a geographical account of the region by the leading specialist of the time, James MacQueen (1778-1870), widely considered one of his most important works.; Jahr: 1843; Format: Oktav; Anzahl der Seiten: XXVII, 529; Auflage: 1.; Zustand: 3 (Spine with tears. Littlewood presented by her very affectionate Papa on her birthday 1845?.First edition of this account of travels in Ethiopia by the German missionaries and linguists Krapf (1810-81) and Isenberg (1806-84), opening with 'a geographical memoir on eastern and central Africa', followed by sections on the 'journey from Zeila to Ankobar', 'residence at Ankobar', and 'journey from Ankobar to Massowah'. Krapf arrived in Ethiopia in 1837 where he joined Isenberg, 'who had been in Tigre since 1835. Here he made his first long overland journey and set out to master the Cushitic speech of the Oromo people . However, opposition from local Ethiopian priests soon forced the missionaries to leave the country. Isenberg and Krapf went south and established themselves at Shoa between June and November 1839. The former returned to England soon after, but Krapf remained in Shoa until March 1842 when he removed to Cairo' (Howgego).
