Nel 1949 «Richard Crossman aveva proposto a Silone di partecipare a un volume collettivo in cui alcuni intellettuali descrivessero "il loro viaggio verso il comunismo, e il loro ritorno" (come Crossman dirà nell introduzione). Accanto a Silone figureranno nel libro, accolto da una larghissima eco di apprezzamenti e di polemiche, Arthur Koestler, Richard Wright, André Gide, Louis Fischer e Stephen Spender» (Falcetto). Silone scrive il testo che poi, in italiano, sulle colonne di «Comunità» (n. 5, settembre-ottobre 1949), prenderà titolo «Un uscita di sicurezza», poi eponimo della raccolta del 1965: scheda 39). L anno appena successivo la stessa «Comunità» traduce l intero libro di Crossman in italiano, riproponendo il testo di Silone con questa avvertenza: «Il testo di Silone [ ] ha provocato numerose e vivaci reazioni nella stampa politica, tra cui merita speciale menzione un articolo di Palmiro Togliatti ("Unità", 6 maggio [ma: gennaio] 1950, "Contributo alla psicologia d un rinnegato"). A seguito di ciò l autore [ ] ha apportato al testo della presente edizione alcune aggiunte riguardanti il periodo di tempo tra il 1927 e il 1931».
