Erstausgabe
Pp. (xxiv), 484, register (20); (ii), 526, register (22); (ii), 538, register (14). With woodcuts in the text and one folding view of Cohoes Falls. Contemporary half calf, spines ruled in gilt and with red title labels, rubbed. Volume three's spine ends expertly restored. Old ownership signatures on titles. Scarce first edition of this early Swedish valuable account on American natural history. Pehr Kalm (1716-79), Finnish - Swedish botanist and economist, was sent by Linné to North America between 1748-51 to study the flora and collect specimens of plants and seeds to bring back to Sweden. Unfortunately many of the seeds and plants died on the way home. His narrative comprises the stay in England, the Atlantic voyage, the visits to Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and also his travels within Canada (to Montreal, Quebec and Lorette). Streeter ii, 823: "One of the most important and reliable 18th century accounts of Amercian natural history, social organization, and political situation". A fourth part written in 1777 was never published. The manuscript and his diaries were kept at the Academy of Åbo but destroyed during a fire in 1927. (A ms copy of parts of the diaries were discovered and published in 1929). Howes K5 "b". Larsson 329. Sabin 36986, Schiötz Itineraria Norvegica 511a.

First Edition of the English Translation by John Reinhold Forster, incorporating additional notes by the translator, a map and plates of American birds and animals. The English version contains only the portion of the narrative relating to Kalm's travels in America. An important early work on American natural history and a classic in North American travel literature. The celebrated Swedish botanist, Pehr Kalm, travelled extensively throughout North America from 1748 to 1751, under the auspices of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, and largely at the urging of Linnaeus. His primary purpose was to study the flora of the country and to collect plant specimens with a view to discovering whether any might be advantageously domesticated in Sweden. In his honour, Linnaeus subsequently named 'Kalmia', a species of evergreen shrub common to the United States. Kalm visited Philadelphia, Germantown, Wilmington, New Bristol, Trenton, Princeton, New York, Raccoon (N.J.), Salem, Rapaapo, Albany, Saratoga, Fort Anne, Fort St. Frédéric, Lake Champlain, Montreal, Three Rivers, Quebec, Lorette, Bay St. Paul, and Sault au Recollet. His narrative is not restricted to botanical subjects, but includes interesting observations on religious and social institutions, customs and traditions, native peoples, and the value of the colonies. His description of the Swedish settlements in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, is considered to be the most accurate and trustworthy of the period, and his impressions of Canada and Canadian society are extensive, informative and highly favourable. In Montreal and Quebec, he found what he considered to be the most cultivated society in North America. There he was welcomed and entertained by La Galissonière, the Baron de Longueil, and Jean-François Gaultier, who greatly impressed him with their scientific interest and knowledge. "Ce simple journal sans prétensions littéraires.reste la description la plus fidèle du milieu et des moeurs de la Nouvelle France au dix-huitième siècle.
