Ruralia RURALIA 8 Processing, Storage, Distribution of Food Food in the Medieval Rural Environment J. Klapste, P. Sommer (eds.) VIII+433 p., 210 x 297 mm, 2011 ISBN: 978-2-503-53661-3 Languages: English, French, German Paperback The publication is available. Retail price: EUR 85,00 In presenting the conference papers on the theme of food in the medieval countryside, Ruralia has managed to present a most useful platform in which mainstream archaeologists, historians and environmental specialists can exchange information and discuss similar issues from across Europe. The paradigms for understanding the dynamic of medieval society are seeing significant change. We increasingly understand the subtleties of the many and diverse influences that affected the production of food throughout the period. Regional variation emerges as a key observation, where different places are able to develop their own unique character, and how such exploitation can change over time. In addition to the more traditional model of subsistence economies, there is greater recognition of the market economy although views still differ on how early we can see the evidence for integrated markets. It is within this context that the distinctions between rural and urban become less clear. The interrelationships between both landscapes are being studied and will become a dominant theme over the next decade. The 33 presentations that constitute he papers arising from the present conference reflect the different approaches being pursued across the discipline. Table of Contents Jorge A. Eiroa Rodriguez, Fortified granaries in southeastern al-Andalus - Jose Maria Martin Civantos, The archaeology of irrigated spaces in southeast Spain during the medieval period - Guillermo Garcia-Contreras Ruiz, Production and use of salt in al-Andalus: A state of the art and a perspective on its study - Helena Kirchner, Watermills in the Balearic Islands during the Muslim period - Philippe Mignot, Greniers collectifs berberes. Ruralia (RURALIA 9) Hierarchies in rural settlements Hierarchien in ländlichen Siedlungen. Des hierarchies dans l'habitat rural J. Klapste (ed.) VIII+462 p., 22 colour ill., 210 x 297 mm, 2013 ISBN: 978-2-503-54517-2 Languages: English, French, German Paperback The publication is available. Retail price: EUR 90,00 The Ruralia, Volume 9, includes thirty papers dealing with the various aspects of social and economic hierarchy in the rural settlement in medieval Europe mainly from archaeological point of view. The authors from 15 countries provide a broad overview of the current issues, complemented for the most part by extensive bibliographies. Very important are also the high quality figures. The main topics include the differentiation of rural social and economic structure, reflected, for example, in the building culture and various aspects of everyday life. The topic of discussion is the hierarchy of power and the many ways it is presented in archaeology. The focus is on the manor houses and manorial farms, as well as the grain mills in rural areas and the impact of mining activity. The Ruralia, Volume 9, represents one of the current fields of European archaeological research and offers a solid foundation for further comparative studies. Table of Contents Sabine Felgenhauer-Schmiedt, Zur Präsenz von Herrschaft im Dorf des Mittelalters in Ostösterreich - iu. Herbert Knittler, Molendinum & villa.
