First Edition Thus. First printing; trade issue. Folio. 38cm x 29cm. Publisher's white paper covered boards; dustjacket; 205pp. Titled in black to spine and front board, with the front in Steadman's signature ink spattered style. Clean and bright, bumped to bottom board corners, in a clean and very bright example of the dustjacket. Were it not for the bumping, a fine copy, as it is; a very good, clean copy indeed. A visually extremely impressive re-issue of HST's 1983 original, with all of Steadman's frothing, unrestrained artistic energy thrashing around Thompson's text whilst the two of them attempt to rampage around Hawaii in the way HST did Las Vegas, finding as always that with Hunter S. Thompson it isn't the place, it isn't the time, and it isn't the social climate, it's just him, witnessing the world in a way it is never going to be comfortable with. Published in the year of his death, this publication ended up being something of a memorial to a legendary creative partnership.

[Original artwork] FIRST EDITION THUS, trade issue, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, with superb ORIGINAL PAINTING. Folio (39 x 30cm), pp.208. With numerous fantastical colour illustrations by Steadman, many double-paged. Publisher's white hardcovers screen-printed in black, colour-illustrated dust-jacket. To the half-title is a most personal painted caricature of author Hunter S. Thompson, dated 2006, in trademark blood red ink with flamboyant splashes, some of which are offset to the jacket. Both letters 'O' from the printed 'LONO' have been used to form the lenses of the good Doctor's trademark specs, depicted in typical style with cigarette and Lake Bucket hat. A fine copy. Originally published in a quarto format in 1983, this new folio edition features striking full-colour illustrations from Thompson's long-time friend and collaborator Ralph Steadman. Thompson died a month before this lavish book was published; Steadman's portraits of the author are scarce and desirable.

First edition of the author's third book and hallmark of campaign journalism. Octavo, original black boards. Boldly signed by Hunter Thompson on the half-title page and subjects, George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Gary Hart and illustrator, Ralph Steadman. Fine in a near fine first issue price-clipped dust jacket with the white boarder around the photograph of Thompson and McGovern on the rear panel. The book is notable for its introduction not only to the candidates of 1972 but also its early glimpses of future political leaders. Gary Hart of Colorado, who served as McGovern's campaign manager and would later run for and win a seat in the United States Senate, and Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter, who would himself capture the 1976 Democratic nomination and Presidency. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. A unique example with this collection of signatures. Forty years after its original publication, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 72 remains a cornerstone of American political journalism and one of the bestselling campaign books of all time. Hunter S. Thompson s searing account of the battle for the 1972 presidency from the Democratic primaries to the eventual showdown between George McGovern and Richard Nixon is infused with the characteristic wit, intensity, and emotional engagement that made Thompson "the flamboyant apostle and avatar of gonzo journalism" (The New York Times). Hilarious, terrifying, insightful, and compulsively readable, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 72 is an epic political adventure that captures the feel of the American democratic process better than any other book ever written. "Thompson should be recognized for contributing some of the clearest, most bracing and fearless analysis of the possibilities and failures of American democracy in the past century" (Chicago Tribune).
