Anbieter: J. Patrick McGahern Books Inc. (ABAC), Ottawa, ON, Kanada
Hardcover. 24cm, xxvi,472p. with 3 plates & rear folding pocket map, limited to 550 copies, this being #85, original gilt crested red cloth, t.e.g., spine slightly sunned else a very good to fine copy. (wst) "The letters printed here are, with few exceptions, addressed to James Hargrave. They were written at posts from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Pacific coast, and from the southern limits of the Hudson's Bay Territory to the Arctic circle. They form what is probably a unique chronicle of the north and west in the days before newspapers. An attempt has been made to choose letters that throw light on the conditions of the country, the conduct of the trade, and the life of the traders. Since the letters are private, they reveal much that was necessarily omitted from official correspondence". Introduction.

8vo. pp. xvi, [17]-506. original cloth (scuffed, extremities frayed, light foxing to outer leaves, marginal stain to dedication leaf). First Edition. Hargrave entered the service of the Hudson s Bay Company in 1841 and was sent to the Red River where he acted as secretary to his uncle, William MacTavish, governor of Assiniboia. From 1869 to 1884 he was engaged in the fur trade at Red River, and from 1884 to his retirement in 1889, he was stationed at Fort Edmonton. This is a valuable history of the Red River Settlement, based on Hargrave s personal experiences and on papers belonging to his father, who was also a Company employee. The work gives a good account of events leading up to the Red River Rebellion, and includes a relation of the author s difficult trip from England to the western Canadian settlements via Chicago and St. Paul. Peel 505. Lande 1215.
