Erstausgabe
First edition. Publisher's original green cloth with dark blue titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with mild spotting to the closed fore-edge are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lighty rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that is a touch toned to the spine. Not price-clipped (7/6 net to the front flap). The first and seemingly only novel by the great nephew of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (and great grandson of painter Ford Madox Brown), contemporary reviews of which appear largely positive. "Three young men all different in temperament, all leading different lives in business and pleasure, and yet all bound together by coincidence and a new writer's skilled penmanship." Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

1p., US letter, horizontal crease where previously folded, very good; unframed. An excellent letter from President Ford to Prime Minister Harold Wilson, signed by the POTUS in bold black ink: 'Dear Prime Minister: It is a source of continuing pleasure to me to know that we both belong to the world fraternity of pipe smokers. I am very pleased to send you the accompanying set of colourful American pipes, which I hope you will enjoy. With best wishes, Sincerely, Gerald R. Ford' Both Ford & Wilson were prolific pipe-smokers; Ford, who smoked on average eight pipeloads a day while in office, has been labelled America's 'greatest president' by political pundit Alexander Cockburn, simply because, in his opinion, he did the least damage.

With the stamp of a private collector on the verso. A Union cavalry brigade's mission behind Confederate lines is complicated when they are forced to take a woman prisoner after she overhears their plans. Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Four title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1967 film. Based on the 1947 musical by E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy, who also adapted the story to the screen. The four maquettes in this archive are stylistically similar, but quite different from the titles used in the finished film. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films, worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "Finian's Rainbow" his credits include "Comanche!" (1956), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Psycho" (1960), "The Birds" (1963), "In the Heat of the Night" (1967), and "Justine" (1969). In 2012, an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation, Kansas City. Warner Brothers optioned the musical shortly after its premiere in 1947, but Harburg and Saidy were unwilling to tone down the racial satire to fit studio demands, holding out until the option was about to expire and Warner agreed to a script with only minimal changes twenty years later. Coppola was an odd choice to direct, with his realistic, New Hollywood Cinema approach to filmmaking at odds with the fantastical nature of the material, and the results were decidedly mixed, despite a widely-loved performance by Clark. Each study 16 x 8 inches, containing a reproduction of a color landscape photograph mounted on board and matted in black, with two plastic overlays - one with white lettering, and the second with color embellishments to the letters attached to the top of the mats with tape. Very Good plus condition overall. Hirschhorn, p. 392.

Vintage borderless matte-finish photograph from the set of the 1959 film, showing director John Ford smoking a cigar with model China Machado, who was then dating leading actor Bill Holden. With the stamp of still photographer Peter Basch on the verso, along with manuscript pencil annotations identifying Ford and Machado. Loosely based on the 1956 novel by Harold Sinclair, which in turn was based on the historic Civil War battle of Newton's Station and Grierson's Raid.
