Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Three albums. Oblong folios one measuring 13" x 10, the other two measuring 15" x 11". String-tied black and blue leather over stiff paper boards with gilt titles. Contains 227 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 8" x 10" with captions. Albums are near fine with fine photographs. A collection of three photo albums compiled by New Jersey native, Douglas Clifford beginning in the early 1940s. Many of the photographs show Clifford's family life and vacations taken by Clifford and his family and friends. Clifford was serving with the Army during this time and it appears these albums represent trips and visits taken on leave and after World War II. Clifford and his family are seen visiting his father's grave site, playing with small children around the family home, and posed around the house. One section shows Clifford and his colleagues from Gimbels Department store where he worked before the war. Many of the photographs are taken on various trips taken over a decade which include many historic sites throughout the United States and Canada. Clifford photographs Fort Ticonderoga, Washington D.C., the House of the Seven Gables, Monticello, Mount Vernon, Plymouth Rock, Barbara Fritchie's home, and Gettysburg Battlefield, among other places. In a photo from Connecticut he captions a photo, "U.S. submarine New London, Connecticut." Clifford is also seen on fishing trips including one to Lake George in Canada. One section of photos shows a trip to New York City with images of the skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Shell Oil Company. He also photographs the Coast Guard Pier where a ship tank was landing. Another photograph shows a "seaplane base at the foot of Wall St." One photo featured here shows a portrait photo of Clifford in his Army uniform. An extensive collection of photographs documenting the family trips of a young man in the Army during the 1940s.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Four volumes. All measuring 15" x 11". String-tied brown leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 413 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 5" x 7", with captions. Very good albums with detached pages, chips, and tears with near fine photographs. An extensive collection of photographs over four albums depicting Douglas Clifford's time serving with the Merchant Marines in the late 1920s. He documents his travels with the Merchant Marines as it takes him around the world from the United States to Australia. Three of the albums contain the ship travel and ports of call including Panama, Gibraltar, Fiji, Palestine, and Buenos Aires, among others. In the opening of his first album he writes, "the skyline of New York fade as the S.S. Docket carried a boy by the name of Douglas Clifford, driven by a determination to see other lands and peoples down by the bay." He photographs his travels with images of street scenes, canals, historic monuments, and locals at ports they stopped at. One reads, "Samoans - a Polynesian Race," another reads "the market place in Dakar, Senegal, French West Africa. Notice how the baby is being carried." Clifford also includes real photo postcards depicting Fiji dancers, tourist attractions, and naval bases. A later section of images shows the Dornier Do X seaplane's trial test showing the craft with statistics written in the captions reading, "121 feet long, 144 feet wide, 12 motors. Largest seaplane in the world." The fourth album of the set depicts Clifford's time serving with the United States Army as a sergeant during World War II. This album begins at Camp Chaffee, Fort Smith, Arkansas where Clifford underwent his basic training. He was a member of Company A 708 Amphibious Tank Battalion and numerous photographs show men next to tanks and armored vehicles. Photos here also document scenes from the camp including the chow line, his bunk, and fellow soldiers. The training received here is also featured throughout with images of men hiking and learning survival skills in the Ozarks. One photo reads, "ten minute break smoke if you have them," another reads, "writing home, Sgt. Biss," and shows a man leaning against a jeep composing a letter. One section reads, "we have only traveled 80 miles from Camp Chaffee. Bound for maneuvers in LA. Texas when this happened" and shows an overturned train. Other images show men with their motorcycles and a tank they called their "pride and joy" General Grant. A later photo shows Clifford in uniform after joining the Super 6th Ar Gold Blue Crimson Cavalry Infantry Artillery. An interesting collection of photographs documenting a Merchant Marine and later Army sergeant's travels with the military from the 1920s through 1945.
