Original wet collodion microscopic slide, under glass, with printed label, monogrammed "J.B.D" and numbered "260", ca. 1860.= The British scientist J.B. Dancer (1812-1887) was associated with a number of significant inventions, one of which was microphotography. His microphotographs have unique quality: as tiny, detailed pictures, they require a magnification of about 100 to make it visible in full detail. Dancer's comprhenesive catalogue of 1873 listed 277 microphotographs, including this one. The microphotograph was seen by some as being a frivolous item, with no practical application. However, after microphotography was used to transfer sensitive information in 1870, during the Franco-Prussian war, the usefulness of the technique began to be recognised. Dancer also pioneered with stereo-photography and was himself a manufacturer and supplier of various instruments.
