Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. 243pp. Octavo [23.5 cm]; tan cloth with lettering and decorative stamping in green. Map endpapers. Index and bibliography. No dust jacket. Boards lightly soiled. Internally clean. The classic treatment of a still-controversial part of Utah, Latter-day Saint, Native American, and Western History. The first edition of historian Juanita Brook's groundbreaking work on the infamous Mountain Meadows Massacre. This exhaustively researched book helped to shine a light on this dark episode in Western history. Cited by many as the definitive work on Mountain Meadows. Other books have been written about this horrible slaughter of the innocent, but none have come close to this work's lasting influence on western history. In particular, it sparked a long process of recognizing the tragedy and helped to gain the area the status of a National Landmark.

Descended from Southern Utah pioneers who were participants in the 1857 atrocity known as the Mountain Meadows Massacre, Juanita Brooks grew up among the red rock country of Southern Utah with vague rumors and whispered stories about the infamous massacre. Determined to get at the truth and exorcise her own demons concerning the Mountain Meadows Massacre, Brooks researched and wrote her masterpiece, 'The Mountain Meadows Massacre' in 1950. This led to a lifelong interest and involvement in John D. Lee, and to her two subsequent major publications: the massive two volume Diaries of John D. Lee, published in 1955 by the Huntington Library, and this full length biography of Lee, first published in 1961. Western Frontiersman Series IX (9). Inscribed by Juanita Brooks on the front free endsheet.

The extremities are moderately bumped and rubbed, there are a couple of very short splits in the cloth at the head of the backstrip, and there is a bit of trivial soiling on the covers. The threads of the signatures are just barely revealed in the inside margins of the text block in several places, however the sturdiness of the text block is not affected. Released a year prior to the red cloth trade edition. The correct first edition, issued in only a minuscule printing of 209 copies, none were offered for sale. They were given to descendants of John D. Lee as well as to friends of the publisher and author.
