This and the books to follow have a prototype in the Atlante fotográfico, or Photo-Atlas, of the Duomo of Modena which came out ten years ago and marked Panini's début in the world of art-publishing. The format of that book has been the object of long and careful reconsideration in numerous discussions, to which many individuals not listed in the acknowledgements contributed help and advice. Among these I should especially like to thank Adriano Peroni, Daniele Benati and Massimo Dolcini. -- The purpose of the series, as is declared in its general title, is to illustrate the 'Wonders of Italy1 as rigorously as possible. The long Vatican Gallery, with its maps representing the country at the height of its glory towards the end of the 16th century, might well figure as an emblem of the whole project. -- This is a new kind of art-publication, in that it revolutionises the concept of the illustration. In place of the usual select number of plates included as illustrations to the text, we offer the reader a series of images that are the result of carefully planned photographic surveys, aiming to transport the entire historic monument onto his table. The camera reveals remote or hidden details invisible to the naked eye and fixes on the page a complete sequence of images calculated to satisfy both the aesthetic sense of the general reader and the needs of the scholar. -- These volumes, then, are a new sort of Atlas ', capable of delineating a world that is often difficult of access and of guiding those who wish to visit it step by step. The images are accompanied by essays and notes of a high scholarly standard which themselves call on a large number of additional images. -- The book format, the explanatory charts and the topographical and documentary precision will all permit the cultural heritage that is Italy's pride to be better known and cared for and will help spread that knowledge still further abroad. -- Especially in view of the decision to publish all text in Italian and English, which will allow non-Italian readers to benefit from the expertise of the authors of the essays and notes in the second volume of each publication. -- Franco Cosimo Panini - Elenco delle Carte geografiche - List of the Maps -- Italia antica - Ancient Italy -- Italia moderna - Modern Italy -- Liguria - Liguria -- Toscana e Lazio settentrionale - Tuscany and Northern Lazio -- I territori di Perugia e Città di Castello - The territories of Perugia and Città di Castello -- Lazio settentrionale - Northern Lazio -- II territorio di Spoleto - The territory of Spoleto -- Lazio méridionale - Southern Lazio -- Campania - Campania -- Campania méridionale e Basilicata - Southern Campania and Basilicata Basilicata e Campania méridionale - Basilicata and Southern Campania Calabria settentrionale - Northern Calabria -- Calabria méridionale - Southern Calabria -- Corsica - Corsica -- Sardegna - Sardinia -- Sicilia - Sicily -- La giurisdizione di Avignone e il Comtat Venaissin - The jurisdiction of -- Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin -- Piemonte e Monferrato - Piedmont and Monferrato -- Il Ducato di Milano - The Duchy of Milan -- I domini di Venezia a ovest del Piave - The mainland possessions of Venice west of the River Piave -- La laguna di Venezia, il Friuli e l'lstria - The Lagoon of Venice, Friuli and lstria -- II Ducato di Parma e Piacenza - The Duchy of Parma and Piacenza Il Ducato di Mantova - The Duchy of Mantua -- Il Ducato di Ferrara - The Duchy of Ferrara -- La giurisdizione di Bologna - The jurisdiction of Bologna -- Romagna - Romagna -- Il Ducato di Urbino - The Duchy of Urbino -- Marche - Marche -- Il territorio di Ancona - The territory of Ancona -- Abruzzo - Abruzzo -- Puglia settentrionale - Northern Puglia -- Puglia méridionale - Southern Puglia -- Civitavecchia - Civitavecchia -- Veduta di Genova - View of Genoa -- Veduta di Venezia - View of Venice -- Ancona - Ancona -- Isole Tremiti - Tremiti Islands -- L'isola di Corfu - Isle of Corfu -- L'isola di Malta - Isle of Malta -- L'isola d'Elba - Isle of Elba. Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Original oversize program for the 1960 Italian, here under the original title. Illustrated in red, with black-and-white stills from the film. Starring actress Signoret is prominently featured, looking pensive or embracing costar Mastroianni, and in stunning group images with her female costars. Also included is an original press packet, detailing film credits, a synopsis, and brief star biographies. Based on an original screenplay, about the 1958 Merlin Law making brothels illegal in Italy. Adua (Signoret) and her three friends are prostitutes whose brothel in Rome is shut down. Adua convinces them to pool their savings to open a restaurant to generate a living, instead of returning to prostitution. Their permit is rejected because of their lurid history, but a former client agrees to buy the building and hire them to run a brothel fronting as a restaurant, charging them rent. The restaurant is ironically successful and Adua even romances Piero (Mastroianni), but her landlord's excessive rent finally vanquishes her hopes for a brighter future. She holds her ground against the man, but no moral deed is without consequences in the underworld, and she is last seen as her destitute former self. Petrangeli also directed "She Wolf" (1953), Visconti's "Ossessione" (1943, assistant director and screenwriter), and Rossellini's "Europe '51" (1952, second assistant director); he was a prolific filmmaker in the Commedia all'italiana, and died while shooting his last film, "How, When and with Whom" (1969). Program 12.5 x 13.5 inches, saddle-stapled, 4 card stock leaves. Very Good, with a heavy vertical crease and foxing. Press packet mimeograph on white stock, corner-stapled, 7 leaves, Very Good plus.
