Front hinge is cracked with exposed netting and frontis is coming away from binding. Boards have visible rubbing and minor bumping to corners. Fair crushing to spine ends and minor rubbing to spine.

With warmest wishes recalling most hectic but momentous days together as members of the Mountbatten team (not forgetting one State banquet at Government House Rangoon!) - India 1947-48, from Alan. November 1951." Alan Campbell-Johnson was Press Attaché on Mountbatten's staff while Mountbatten was Viceroy and Governor General of India. Elizabeth (Ward) was the secretary of Lady Mountbatten at the same time. Pages toned with some ofsetting at endpapers, top edge slightly darkenened, white spot at rear board, else a fairly clean and neat example. Dust jacket is used, marked, heavily torn at edges and reinforced with paper tape. Very good in good minus dust jacket.

Octavo, 272pp. Black cloth, heavy rubbing to spine, wear to tips. Stated "first published 1955" on copyright page. Laid in bookplate from the Library of The Earl of Avon, K.G. Notes and underlining in pencil throughout, often with notes from Eden disagreeing with the author's facts and conclusions. Paired with the publisher's dust jacket, retail price on front flap, large closed tear to front cover, tape repairs to verso, bright illustrations. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Sir Anthony Eden, With the author's kindest regards. Alan Campbell-Johnson / 12th May 1955." Sir Anthony Eden (1897-1977) served as the Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1955-1957, following the retirement of Winston Churchill. Before World War II, Eden served as Foreign Secretary for Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, but resigned in protest of his appeasement policy towards the Axis powers. He returned to the office of Foreign Secretary during World War II and retained that post for the remainder of the war. During his time as Prime Minister, Eden presided over the Suez Canal Crisis, which ended with the withdrawal of Western powers from the region and the eventual resignation of Eden.

Illustrated in black and white. A fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout. Complete with fine original dustwrapper that remains without fading, loss or tears. Not price-clipped (£3.50 net to the front flap). A new edition of the original 1951 publication with a foreword by Admiral of the Fleet, the Earl Mountbatten of Burma written in June 1972 and published here for the first time. Signed in black ink on the half title by Mountbatten of Burma. Inscribed by Alan Campbell-Johnson in blue ink on the front endpaper "To Ian / with warmest wishes / from / Alan / January 1973". The author was a British Liberal Party politician and journalist who served on the staff of Lord Mountbatten during World War II, and as Press Attaché when he became Viceroy and Governor-General of India 1947-1948.
