Three Quarter Leather. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. William de Wiveleslie Abney (1843-1920) extended his interests to spectroscopy and was the first to suggest (1877) that stars with rapid axial rotation could be detected by broadened lines in their spectra - an idea later to have wide application. He then devised a red-sensitive emulsion and with it made the first spectroscopic analyses of the structure of organic molecules (1882) and the first photographs of the solar spectrum in the infrared (1887). Articles illustrated by Plates 24-28. 842 pp. 43 plates. 4to. Recent brown three quarter leather bindings with five raised bands at spine, burgundy title patch with gold embossed titling, gold lines offsetting bands, decorative stamp in each compartment without titling. Numerous folding plates that illustrate articles. Numerous pages throughout volume are brittle with small tears and losses at edges, a large tear at midpoint in the title page of Poynting's article. Pages were trimmed slightly when rebound. The occasional library stamp as it is an ex-library volume, rebound.

Pp. 547-570 a. 4 plates, textillustrations. First printing of both papers. "He (Abney) occupied himself a great deal with photography, photochemical processes, the chemistry of photographic developers and intensifiers, photometric investigations of the law of density of photographic plates, and spectroanalytical work. Importent are his experiments on solarization and the connection of exposures and the intensification of photographic silver bromide gelatine plates."(Eder History of Photography", pp. 454-55).

Abney (illustrator). Second American edition. 8vo., vii, 192 pp., 36 pp. adverts, engraved illustrations. Printed stiff wrappers. The wrappers are lightly chipped, worn and stained; the first 75 pages have a small stain limited to the fore edge. Owner's ink stamp on the title page. A very good copy. A most important manual that covers all processes being practiced during this period with hundreds of emulsion processes and developers detailed in full. Also includes unusual approaches such as beer and coffee preservatives and how to color (safelight) darkroom windows. Abney made important contributions in the field, i.e. hydroquinone as developer [1880] and silver gelatino citrochloride printing-out paper. Roosens and Salu No. 3516 calls this the second edition and fails to note the 1883 Scovil printing, which is an exact replical of this edition.

First and only edition, large 8vo, [2], 77, [1]pp., 14 lithograph plates, diagrams in the text, orig. blue printed wrappers, some light chipping. This significant and important work which explores how light affects watercolour pigments. The report highlighted the impact of continuous exposure to daylight on watercolours exhibited in museums, at the time The National Gallery in London faced controversy over keeping watercolours on display during the day, with some watercolours were practically ruined by prolonged exposure.
