, Williams, Robert R., 1939-. Schleiermacher the theologian : the construction of the doctrine of God. Philadelphia : Fortress Press, 1978, xiii, 196 p. ; 24 cm., very good black cloth, boards a bit warped, previous owner's name: Berger - 1978 [=sociologist Peter L. Berger]. Following Husserl rather than Barth and noting inflluence of Cusanus on Schleiermacher. Richard Crouter wrote: "the boldest treatment of Schleiermacher's theological method and defense of his doctrine of God to appear in English. His argument, restricted to The Christian Faith, draws heavily from Husserl and contends that Schleiermacher is doing a phenomenological theology" (JAAR, 1979). Robert F. Brown also praised the comparison with Cusanus: "Williams argues persuasively that by reading Schleiermacher as intending something similar to Cusanus's formulation, we can see how his God can be fully related to the world, yet also transcendent and free in that his relatedness does not make him dependent on the world. Also the divine attributes can be grasped as dialectical constituents of God's being, not simply as modes of relation. This ingenious reading via Cusanus makes Schleiermacher's doctrine of God reasonably consistent and displays it to advantage as a third alternative to classical monopolar theism and recent process theologies" (JOR 1979). 9780800605131 ISBN 0800605136.
