He taught moral philoso- phy at Marischal College, Aberdeen, where one of his pupils was Thomas Reid, who became the main representative of the Scottish school of common-sense philoso- phy. Editor Alexander Broadie notes that Turnbull was "the first of a long line of Scottish moralists to speak explicitly about the introduction of the experimental method of reasoning into moral subjects." Turnbull's Principles of Moral and Chris- tian Philosophy (1740) brings together moral philosophy, science, and theology in a distinctive synthesis. The work develops the theme that moral philosophy is a sci- ence that can be understood by using the same methodology as the other empirical sciences. In the first of two volumes, Turn- bull is principally concerned with arguing that the natural order and particularly its governing laws testify to divine providence and that the evidence is irresistible once it is laid out in a suitably scientific fashion. In the second volume, Turnbull focuses on the concept of God's moral governance of the world, a governance that is particularly at work in his recompense for our good and evil acts, so that "whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6/7 ) . The Liberty Fund edition of The Prin- ciples of Moral and Christian Philosophy is the first modern edition of this work. ISBN 9780865974562 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 910.

Hardcover with dust jacket. Zustand: Gut. XXI, 445 p. Lediglich der Schutzumschlag weist leichte Gebrauchsspuren auf, sonst ein gutes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen / Only the dust jacket shows slight signs of handling, otherwise a good copy without markings. - CONTENTS Introduction Acknowledgments Observations upon Liberal Education, in All Its Branches Index. / Although Francis Hutcheson is widely considered the father of the Scottish En- lightenment, his contemporary George Turnbull (1698-1748) equally embodied in his life, and produced with his pen, the moral and intellectual forces and prin- ciples by which the Scottish Enlighten- ment came to be known. Turnbull is one of the earliest and per- haps one of the least-remembered authors in the Scottish tradition. While teaching moral philosophy at Marischal College, Aberdeen, he mentored Thomas Reid, who became the founder of the important common-sense school of Scottish moral philosophy. Knud Haakonssen notes that Turnbull's pivotal role in the Scottish En- lightenment has come to be recognized in much recent work. Observations upon Liberal Education is a courageous work that arose from a longing for a liberty of mind and that tried to lay the groundwork for a society of free, virtu- ous, and educated citizens. Turnbull ar- gued that human beings possessed the moral faculties necessary to live as adults in a free and prosperous society but insisted that these faculties be properly educated in childhood. Terrence Moore writes in the Introduction, "Observations upon Liberal Education provides an extensive and illu- minating treatment of education, sensitive to the means of inculcating the personal responsibility necessary for living in a free society." In order to construct a comprehensive educational program, Turnbull drew upon an impressive number of authors, both an- cient and modern. Indeed, there is perhaps the no better treasure trove of sources for all the various educational debates that took place during the eighteenth century. The work's influence was by no means confined to Scotland. Benjamin Franklin drew gener- ously upon the Observations in creating his own plan of education in Philadelphia. The Liberty Fund edition of Observa- tions upon Liberal Education is the first modern edition of this work ever published. ISBN 9780865974111 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 878.
