First edition. 8vo, 263pp; cloth. The author's second book, and the first published under his pen name, changed from Julian Shapiro in order to sound less obviously Jewish. First edition. Octavo. Cloth boards; dustjacket; 263pp. A very good copy, darkened on spine; in a crisp, bright jacket with a small (1/8") chip at crown. Inscribed and signed by Sanford on front endpaper: "For Max Lamb / Sincerely / John Sanford," dated 1961. Sanford's uncommon second novel (and the first using his nom de plume), nicely inscribed to his friend the screenwriter Max Lamb. Sanford went on to publish 24 books and several screenplays but, in the words of his bibliographer, he has remained "the finest unread author writing in English," owing in some degree to his intractability with editors but certainly also to his staunch leftist political leanings, which got him blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Not in Hanna.
