London, Virtue & Co., 1873, small in-4°, 27,5 x 21,5 cm, vi pp + 89 pp + 57 photo engraved plates (of which 3 maps), bound in the original blue publisher's cloth ( spine repaired , some pages with slight foxing). Still a good/fine copy . This copy was given by the author to the 19th-century politician and member of parliament James Whatman Jun. (His heraldic engraved ex-libris is tipped in on the first paste down, together with a printed ex-dono slip '' With Mr. Plimsoll's Compliments ''). Later the book came in the library of the famous scientific books collector Harrison D. Horblit ( his printed name label also on the first paste down ). First and original edition of this very important appeal to enhance the safety of seamen. It lead to the Merchant Shipping Act of 1876 which regulated the load ships could carry and the world famous ''Plimsoll Line '' visible on all sea going ships.

A passionate plea for the more humane treatment of cattle and a safer environment for seamen on board cattle transport vessels advanced by the English politician and social reformer. On the verso of the title, Plimsoll claims no rights of publication are reserved except for certain illustrations belonging to a meat merchant named Waldie, and encourages the liberal reprinting of the whole, currently being done in instalments by the County Council Gazette, in order to make the facts of the matter widely known.
1. BROUGHAM, Henry Gesigneerde en geadresseerde voorkant van een envelop met gratis frankeerzegel. 'London Augst three / 1835 / Jn. Mullineux Esq / Liverpool / Brougham '. Vel papier (79 x 120 mm), in passepartout om voorzijde en achterzijde te laten zien. Gestempeld in rood. Wat vlekkig. Handtekening van Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham en Vaux (1778-1868), die Lord Chancellor was geweest van 1830-1834, was de ontwerper en naamgever van de Brougham-koets. Ook was hij een fervent Brits activist tegen de slavernij. Onder zijn ambtstermijn als Lord Chancellor werd de Slavery Abolition Act van 1833 ingevoerd. 2. KOHOUTEK, Lubos Handtekening van Lubo Kohoutek in blauwe vulpen. Velletje papier (77 x 125 mm) met getypte toeschrijving. De Tsjechische astronoom Lubo Kohoutek (geboren 1935) ontdekte vele planetoïden en kometen. Hij was de naamgever van de Komeet van Kohoutek (1973). 3. PLIMSOLL, Samuel Handtekening op een kaart geplakt, onderstreept. Velletje papier (55 x 94 mm), op kaart geplakt. Een beetje vlekkig, aantekeningen op achterkant. Handtekening van Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898), een Britse politicus, liberaal parlementslid 1867-1880. Hij was een voorstander van veiligheid op schepen en bedacht de lijn die op schepen gezet wordt om de maximale lading af te bakenen, nu bekend als de Plimsoll-lijn. Deze drie handtekeningen kunnen een begin vormen van een mooie verzameling.

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. First. A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Samuel Plimsoll, with the caption "The Sailor's Champion". With accompanying biographical details. Samuel Plimsoll (10 February 1825 - 3 June 1898) was a British politician and social reformer, now best remembered for having devised the Plimsoll line (a line on a ship's hull indicating the maximum safe draft, and therefore the minimum freeboard for the vessel in various operating conditions).
