Text block a little browned & brittle, rather damp-stained in places. Uncut in orig. drab printed boards; neatly rebacked, a little dusted & rubbed. A sound copy only of a scarce book. Brandreth, 1785-1817, a Luddite stocking-maker, known as 'The Nottingham Captain', was encouraged by a government spy, William Oliver, to lead a march on Nottingham, expecting to be part of a national uprising to overthrow the government. There were 35 defendants; Brandreth, Turner, & Ludlam were convicted of High Treason. They became known as the Pentrich Martyrs as they were not only executed by hanging, but were then beheaded by axe - the last people to be so treated. On the following e.p. in a contemp. hand someone has written 'George Weightman received a reprieve'; he was in fact transported to Australia (along with several other defendants), and died there in 1865.
