Hardcover. First edition. 369pp. Small octavo [20 cm] Red cloth covered boards with gilt stamped titles. Very good condition. The covers are very subtly concave. The edges of the spine and covers are slightly bumped and rubbed. There is a slightly more prominent indentation in the top edge of the rear cover. The underlying boards are just peeking through along the bottom edge of the rear cover. The endsheets are mildly darkened. The edges of the endsheets are lightly foxed, and have numerous small light stains. The front endsheet is cracked along the hinge. There is a former owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. There are four small light stains on the rear endsheet. The pages are browned. Flake 4447. Eberstadt III: 302. From the Preface- "In the accompanying pages will be found a detail of travel, novel in its character, performed by a common man, of but ordinary schooling.".

Quarto, bound in full red morocco by Riviere & Son with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt presidential seal to the front panel with white and blue morocco onlays, gilt arms and motto of George Washington to the rear panel with white and blue morocco onlays and his gilt signature in facsimile, centerpieces within quintuple gilt ruling with star emblems at each corner, blue morocco doublures with multiple gilt presidential signatures, blue silk endpapers. This complete series of autographs of the first 34 Presidents of the United States contains the signature of each mounted on an album leaf opposite a loosely tissue-guarded engraved portrait of each. The collection includes: the signature of George Washington on an envelope addressed to Major General Knox as Secretary ofÂtheÂSocietyÂofÂthe Cincinnati, November 3, 1783; a clipped signature of John Adams; clipped signature of Thomas Jefferson; the signature of James Madison on an envelope addressed to Reverend Frederick Freeman of Manayunk, Pennsylvania; and inscription signed by James Monroe; the signature of John Quincy Adams on an envelope addressed to William Plumer jun.
