With los of 2 words "hath been"at C1 due to small hole in page but no loss to sense and one side blank at that point , other wise pleasing very good copy with clean text. Wing G1468 Gracian was a great influence on later philosophers, esp Nietzsche and Schopenhauer (who translated the work into German.) . More recently he has had a revival in the self help movement as a slightly more benign version of Macchiavelli.A new translation by Christopher Maurer (New York: Doubleday) became a national bestseller in the U.S. in 1992 selling almost 200,000 copies, it was also translated into many languages. A Dutch printing of a French translation of a Spanish book on an Italian diplomat; Gracián?s first book, translated by poet, translator and Jesuit priest Joseph de Courbeville (1688-1715). A response to The Prince and a critique of Machiavelli, it was first published in Spanish in 1637. This French translation first appeared in 1725, and was translated into English in 1726.
