Manthey Jr' inked to front pastedown with bookplate of Richard Sale.First edition. In 1886 Younghusband (1863-1942) 'accompanied a seven-month expedition toManchuria. InPeking (Beijing)in March 1887 he met his superiorColonel Mark Sever Bell, and the two men obtained leave to return to India by separate land routes. Younghusband, alone with hired guides, spent seven months crossing theGobiDesert toHami, and over the Himalaya viaKashgarand theMuztaghPass to Kashmir. The crossing of this19,000 footpass was a rite of passage which heightened his sense of being a lone Englishman carrying "England's mission" into new territory . On returning to London in April 1888Younghusbandlectured to theRoyal Geographical Society; he was elected their youngest fellow, and awarded the founder's medal in 1890. In 1889 91 he consolidated his role as a trekking arm of empire in the border zones of British India, Russia, China, and Afghanistan, and recorded these journeys inThe Heart of a Continent(1896)' (ODNB).

No further editions were printed until this stated "Fourth Edition" of 1904. Presumably this fourth edition was called for by the public interest in Tibet around the time of the British military invasion of Tibet in 1904, led by Colonel Younghusband. The fourth edition is abridged, with fewer illustrations and only 1 map. It has a new 1 page preface by the author. "The alterations I have made are merely verbal; and with the exception of the omission, for the sake of brevity, of two chapters on Chitral and Hunza, which did not deal with travel pure and simple, I venture to send out my book yet again in its original form, hoping that there may still be some who may find in reading it the same enjoyment which the writing and revising of it has afforded me." - from the author's preface, dated Hyantse, Tibet, May 30, 1904. ; 8vo.
