Vintage press photograph of director Cecil B. DeMille standing at the entrance to the Paramount Studio Gymnasium in 1951, likely taken during production of DeMille's 1952 film "The Greatest Show on Earth." With a provenance stamp on the verso. The gymnasium was created from the old United Studios barn, a result of Paramount's takeover of United in 1926. Four years later, Paramount hired James Davies, a former Canadian boxing champion, to work as the gymnasium's trainer, dietician, and all-around "health man to the stars." The facility was open to actors, directors, and executives alike, and many employees took weekly (and even daily) advantage of Davies' skills as a masseur. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus, with light creasing to the corners.

Rare archive of typed letters signed by legendary American film producer and star Cecil B. DeMille to Italian artist Fortunino Matania discussing paintings commissioned to assist in the set design of the 1956 film The Ten Commandments. The archive contains 10 typed letters signed by DeMille dated July 24 1952 to November 18 1957 on DeMille's Paramount Pictures Corporation letterhead as well as 32 additional letters of correspondence, 4 photographs and a first edition of Drawing From History: The Forgotten Art of Fortunino Matania. Italian artist Fortunino Matania became a war artist at the outbreak of the First World War and was acclaimed for his graphic and realistic images of trench warfare. It was after the war, however, when he began painting scenes of ancient high life for British woman's magazine Britannia and Eve, that Matania found his true passion. His talents made him a popular illustrator for advertising, posters and catalogues and he was commissioned in 1952 by DeMille to create a number of paintings of Rome and Egypt from which authentic designs could be made for the movie. Filmed on location in Egypt, Mount Sinai and the Sinai Peninsula, The Ten Commandments was DeMille's most successful work, his first widescreen film, his fourth biblical production, and his final directorial effort before his death in 1959. It is a remake of the prologue of his 1923 silent film of the same title, and features one of the largest exterior sets ever created for a motion picture. Four screenwriters, three art directors, and five costume designers worked on the film and the interior sets were constructed on Paramount's Hollywood soundstages. In 1957, the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. It remains one of the most financially successful films ever made. In near fine condition. A fascinating archive demonstrating the extent of DeMille's labors in the creation of his masterpiece. Between 1914 and 1958 American film director, producer and actor Cecil B. DeMille made 70 features, both silent and sound films. He is acknowledged as a founding father of the American cinema and the most commercially successful producer-director in film history.

Vintage double-weight matte-finish photograph of editor and publisher Rob Wagner with director Cecil B. DeMille, circa 1930s. Annotations in manuscript ink and pencil on the verso, identifying DeMille and Wagner, as well as a humorous note by Wagner's wife Florence, noting that DeMille "was to me the most unattractive and uninteresting show-off in Hollywood-then or now." Although he enjoyed a lengthy career as a director, screenwriter, and magazine writer, Rob L. Wagner is best remembered today as the editor and publisher of "Script," a left-leaning, weekly literary film magazine published in Beverly Hills between 1929 and 1949. A lifelong Socialist and advocate for progressive causes, Wagner used "Script" to give a voice to blacklisted screenwriters (including Dalton Trumbo and Gordon Kahn) and prominent leftists, including Upton Sinclair, Max Eastman, and William C. deMille. Wagner also worked as the part-time secretary of Charlie Chaplin starting in 1915, and with Chaplin and others founded the Motion Picture Relief Fund (which later became the Motion Picture and Television Fund) in 1929, providing financial aid to film industry workers. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good, lightly and evenly toned, slightly wavy at the top and bottom edges.

Vintage borderless press photograph of Leatrice Joy being presented a "star contract" from producer and Paramount founder Jesse L. Lasky, supported by director Cecil B. DeMille in 1924. Mimeo snipe printed on verso. Debuting as an extra in 1917, Joy soon was soon cast opposite comics Billy West and Oliver Hardy, when she caught the attention of DeMille, becoming one of his protegees and starring in several of his films. Often cast as an archetypal 1920s "strong-willed independent woman," Joy impulsively cut her hair extremely short in 1926, much to DeMille's dismay, and is generally credited with starting the bobbed-hair craze of the 1920s. She largely retired after the advent of sound, taking only a few supporting roles through the 1930s 1940s, and 1950s. 8.5 x 7 inches. Very Good plus, evenly faded with light creasing.
