Undertaken by his Majesty's Command, 1773. First edition. 3 folding maps & 12 engraved folding plates (including views and diagrammatic plates). With tables (some folding). 4to. Fine contemporary marbled calf. Red label and gilt to spine. Edges, corners, joints and headcaps rubbed, spine a little worn. Binding sound. A little offsetting to endpapers and from a bound in green silk book-mark, one browned plate. viii, 253, [binder's directions]pp. London, W. Bowyer and J. Nichols, Departing in 1773, Constantine John Phipps, 2nd Baron Mulgrave, led the reinforced bomb sloops Racehorse and Carcass in search of a route to the East Indies via the Arctic. It was the first expedition to specifically set out for the North Pole since 1615, and they reached as far as 80°48' before being blocked by the ice north of Spitzbergen, where they were forced to turn back. CHAR(13) + CHAR(10)The long appendix contains valuable tabulated observations and results obtained on the voyage, for which it is considered to be the first purely scientific expedition to the Arctic. In the zoological observations Phipps is the first to give a scientific binomial and description to the species polar bear (Thalarctos maratimus Phipps). The specially appointed astronomer Israel Lyons conducted important research for the Board of Longitude, including the trialling of timekeepers, and a Dr. Charles Irving accompanied the ship in the capacity of surgeon, though first and foremost to oversee the trial of his own invented device to distil sea water into drinking water. His assistant, Olaudah Equiano, also describes the voyage in his 1789 autobiography The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Or Gustavus Vassa, The African. Though not mentioned in Phipps' official account, the voyage is also renowned for a close encounter which occurred between a polar bear and a fourteen-year-old midshipman, by the name of Horatio Nelson. Hill, 1351; Sabin, 62572.

VIII, 253 pp.First edition of Phipps's account of his expedition to the Arctic. The expedition with the ships Racehorse and Carcass sailed north by way of the Shetlands, reaching the coast of Spitsbergen on 29 June 1773. They passed Magdalena Hoek in early July, but were unable to penetrate the pack ice. A second attempt also failed. Notwithstanding this failure, the crew was successful in making numerous scientific observations and discovering several new species of animals, among them the ivory gull. "Phipps was also incidentally the first to give an adequate description of the polar bear (Thalarctos maritimus Phipps) and to give it a scientific binominal" (Savours). The crew included the future Admiral Horatio Nelson as midshipman and Olaudah Equiano, a former slave whose autobiography would cause a huge sensation. With bookplate. With minor marginal water stains in a couple plates, occasional minor foxing, and the fore-edge of the first folding plate slightly tattered and repaired (not approaching the plate edge), but generally in fine condition and with large margins. Binding very good, with the board edges slightly worn. A lovely and well illustrated account of an important arctic voyage.l Chavanne 1944; ESTC T152604; Hill 1351; Maslen & Lancaster, Bowyer ledgers 5043; Sabin 62572; cf. recent bound in style full brown calf, spine with five raised bands, title in gilt on black morocco label on spine, spine decorated with gilt motifs, upper and lower board with decorative gilt rules, marbled paper upper and lower free end papers, with inner gilt band motif., Constantine John Phipps, 2nd Baron Mulgrave (1744?1792) was an English explorer and officer in the Royal Navy. He served during the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence, seeing action in a number of battles and engagements. Inheriting a title, he also went on to have a successful career in Parliament, and occupied a number of political offices during his later years. Constantine John Phipps was appointed by the Admiralty in 1773 to command an Arctic expedition in search of a passage to the Pacific. Among the crew was a young Horatio Nelson and a freed slave, Olaudah Equiano, who became the first African to visit the Arctic. Although unsuccessful in its primary aim, the voyage is noteworthy for Phipps' description of the polar bear as a distinct species, and for being a naval voyage on which research was deemed as crucial as exploration. , Size : Quarto (4to.), , Illustrated with 14 views, charts and plans, the work includes a substantial appendix containing the scientific data., References : Hill 207; Sabin 62572, P. Half title, folding map, title, blank, dedications (v-viii), introduction (1-15), blank, title (journal), blank, (19-76), folding map, title (appendix), appendix (79-253).
