Magazin / Zeitschrift Erstausgabe
Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Folio (280x410mm) - 2 Volumes 3 & N° 5-6 (24+60pp) - dual-tone reproductions. Edited in Paris between 1967 and 1971 by the art critic Jean Clay and the visual poet Julien Blaine, Robho magazine introduced an international view of art. The magazine aimed to shed light on institutional critique and cultural resistance to American‐style capitalist expansion. To this end Robho included a significant number of Latin American artists. With graphic design by Carlos Cruz‐Diez, many of the magazine s central articles were devoted to Madi art, Jesús Rafael Soto, Julio Le Parc, Lygia Clark and the Argentine collective experience Tucumán Arde. If the aforementioned artists were neither political exiles nor guerrilla fighters it may be thought, though, that being Latin American carried particular connotations within the context of the crisis of French modernisation in the 1960s, related to the imaginary of the Third World. This article aims to analyse Robho magazine s selection and interpretation of the work of Latin American artists during this period dominated by the events of May 1968 and the mistrust towards representativity. Two out of 5 issues. Text in French. Very rare publication. Original wrappers. In Very good condition.

Paris, Les Carnets de l'Octéor nouvelle série, 1969, double-issue, 60 pag., illustrated, printed in purple in ca.1000-1500 copies, original stapled illustrated wrappers, folio (41 x 27,6 cm.). = Final issue of 5 published from 1967-1969. Avant-garde art periodical close to concrete art movements, edited by Julien Blaine and Jean Clay, designed by Carlos Cruz-Diez, photographs by Michel Desjardins and André Morain. Robho opposes the predominance of American capitalism in the art world, and published much articles on Latin American art and Robho was the first French periodical to pay attention to the Japanese Gutaï movement. The publication gives positive attention to visual and concrete poetry, also linked to various forms of performance art. This issue contains an extensive report on the artist manifestations against the MOMA in 1969. On Blaine: "Born in Rognac, France, in 1942, Julien Blaine (= Christian Poitevin), began his artistic production in the early 1960s by addressing the theme of the relationship between word and image. Eclectic and experimental, he s a visual and sound poet, performer and international events organizer. In 1962 he made his first performance entitled "Reps elephant 306", which is nothing more than an interview with the elephants from the circus Franchi, followed by the action "Target poem" in which involves the present audience. In 1962 he began his publishing activity by founding the magazine "Les Carnets de l Octéor" and at the same time collaborating with Ben Vautier on "Identité". In 1966, together with Jean Francois Bory, he founded "Approches", which he closed in 1969, followed by "Robho" in 1967, with Jean Clay and Alain Schifres, and "Geronymo" in 1970. Among his most important publications there is Doc(k)s: a monographs series written to define the poetic experiences collected in different parts of the World. Over the years, he has established collaborative relationships with various Italian visual poets with whom he has ventured into the production of performances." Some traces of handling; corners slightly dog-eared; very faintly waterstained on frontcover; a bit worn along spine, but overall in very good condition. Without inserts.
