[Literary Biography] LIMITED EDITION with AUTOGRAPH SIGNED LETTER. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.viii; 139 [1]. With three double-sided black and white photographic plates, as well as a frontispiece portrait of the subject. An out-of-series copy concurrent with an edition of 750 numbered copies. Also with a loose plate from another book, a poem printed on brown card dated 1986, and a very brief autograph letter from the author in black ink on a sheet of Basildon Bond note paper, dated 15th September 1979, all loose to preliminaries. Publisher's plain card covers, with the yellow dust jacket in the style of the iconic 'Yellow Book' magazine, priced at £4.65. Jacket a little toned to spine, with some light wear to edges. Near fine.

A translation of Jacob's 1945 'Conseils À Un Jeune Poète', published in English to mark the centenary of Jacob's birth. The book was written in 1941, in the form of a series of short paragraphs, intended by Jacob to answer the question 'What is a lyrical line?' It was to be Jacob's last major statement on poetry, he died in 1944 in a Nazi deportation camp. Jacques Evrard, to whom Jacob's answer to the question was directed, provides an afterword. Max Jacob [ 1876 - 1944 ] French poet, painter, writer, and critic. 125 grams.
