Abel, Lionel. Metatheatre: a new view of dramatic form. New York: Hill and Wang, 1964, 2d printing, 146pp., small PAPERBACK, cover price $1.45, very good, previous owner's name and a few pencil marks inside front cover. Cover design by Saul Lambert. A Dramabook. - CONTENTS: Tragedy -- Metatheatre -- Relevancies. // This book introduces a new word: Metatheatre. The word metatheatre introduces a new way of looking at drama. The author of this book says that metatheatre is the right term to describe the only form possible to the contemporary playwright who wishes to treat a subject gravely. Tragedy, invented by the Greeks to describe pain and yet give pleasure, is unrealizable today. Realism, confronting us with the sufferings of life, can give satisfaction. But realism cannot exalt, as tragedy did. How can the modern dramatist describe suffering, yet keep it at a pleasurable, a contemplative, distance? Only through metatheatre, says Mr. Abel. His fascinating essays explain the nature and importance of metatheatre -- in Calderdon or Shakespeare, as well as in Brecht or Genet. Lionel Abel is a playwright and critic. His Absalom won two awards as the best Off-Broadway play of 1956 and elicited this comment from Camus: "A new playwright changes the world Absalom shows that Lionel Abel is a new playwright." Saul Bellow called Mr. Abel s play, The Death of Odysseus, "a wonderfully intelligent and enchanting comedy." And Harold Clurman characterized The Pretender as an unusual play " so rare in the American theatre as to constitute not only a virtue but a pleasure." Mr. Abel received a Guggenheim Fellowship for drama in 1958-59, and in 1960 a Longview Award for his piece on The Connection, "Not Everyone Is in the Fix," which appears in this volume. His criticism has long appeared in magazines such as Partisan Review, Kenyon Review, Commentary, The New Republic, and The Nation. Alfred Kazin in Contemporaries, writes, "Of the newer critics writing in English, I admire the dramatic criticism of Kenneth Tynan, Eric Bentley, and Lionel Abel.".

Broadsheet, approx. 8-1/2 X 11 in., printed on both sides by mimeograph. An extraordinary statement in support of Lionel Abel's play, based on Sophocles' "The Trachiniae" which played off-Broadway at Stage 73. The recto prints an impassioned statement lauding Abel's play - and criticizing the general mediocrity of New York's commercial theatre - published in the names of an impressive roster of New York's leading artists and intellectuals, including Alfred Barr, Jr., Irving Kristol, Harvey Swados, Irving Howe, Barney (i.e. Barnett) Newman, William Phillips, Norman Podhoretz, Robert Lowell, Meyer Schapiro, Esteban Vicente, Willem de Kooning, James Merrill, and Elizabeth Hardwick, among others. On the verso appear extended quotations from Albert Bermel's review of the play from "The New Leader". A uncommon ephemeron. A hint of toning, few tiny nicks and marks; fine.

May also contain light spine creasing or a few markings such as an owner's name, short gifter's inscription or light stamp. This book consists of plays by John O'Hara, Try!Try!; John Ashbery, The Heroes; James Merrill, The Bait; and Lionel Abel, Absalom. A few photos of the plays are interspersed throughout the text. Try! Try! By O'Hara is the story of a young man returning to civilian life after the Korean War. Described as one of the first "beat" dramas. Ashbery's play reworks the myth of Theseus. Merrill's play concerns itself with Jamesian characters and Abel's play retells the famous biblical story in existential terms. In GOOD condition. Moderate soiling to the covers including one noticeable centimeter sized spot at the lower front corner. Uneven sunning/browning around the edges of the front and back cover. Spine sunned and faded.
