Manuscript letter in French on blue card with signed envelope; small 8vo (9 x 11.6 cm); card headed with address '112 Boulevard Malesherbes [Paris]', signed 'Leon Bakst' and dated '16 Janvier 1914', with autograph envelope stamped and addressed to 'Miss Ella Hepworth Dixon. 6 St Jame's Terrace, Regents Park, London'; slight wear top of envelope but otherwise in very good condition a 'happy new year' from Bakst to suffragist and author of The Story of a Modern Woman. This is a wonderfully personal letter from one of the most influential Russian émigré artists of the twentieth century to a leader of Victorian feminist literature. Ella Hepworth Dixon (1857-1932) was an important figure in the 'New Woman' literary movement. Under the pseudonym of Margaret Wynman she published works critiquing fin de siècle society and detailed the social and economic suffering of women. Her successful novel The Story of a Modern Woman was translated into French and earned her the nickname 'The New Woman' on the continent. Her father, William Hepworth Dixon was also an author and travel writer, notably of The Holy Land (1865). 'Born in Russia in 1866, Léon Bakst belonged to that young generation of European artists who rebelled against 19th century stage realism, which had become pedantic and literal, without imagination or theatricality. There were no specialist trained theatre designers, so painters like Léon Bakst turned their painting skills to theatre design. Bakst's fame lay in the ballets he designed for the Diaghilev Ballets Russes, and huge pageant spectaculars for dancer and patron, Ida Rubinstein. He died in 1924 but after nearly 100 years his magic is as potent as ever, rediscovered by every generation. His influence was such that people who have never heard his name now see the world in a different way' (Victoria & Albert Museum).

Charming ballet costumes in postcards --- Complete set of these lovely postcards with costumes for Bakst's "first complete ballet" production (Schouvaloff). For the Hermitage production of Joseph Bayer's ballet 'Die Puppenfee' [The Fairy Doll] in 1903, Leon Bakst (1866-1924), one of the founders of the famous art group 'Mir Iskusstva' [World of Art], created the costume and set designs, moving the setting from contemporary Vienna to St Petersburg of the 1850s. Bakst "was extremely enthusiastic about this work" (Makarova), as recalled his friend and colleague Alexandre Benois, whose collection of folk toys served as a source of inspiration for the characters in this ballet. It "was Bakst's third production, [and] ignoring Sylvia which was not produced, his first ballet [ ] By the time he came to design The Fairy Doll, he had not only mastered most of the techniques but had developed his individual style which, quite new to theatre design, applied especially to the design of costumes" (Schouvaloff). Shortly after the premiere, the present series of postcards were published for the benefit of the St. Eugenia Red Cross Society in 1904. Fresh and charming, some highlighted with gilt, they feature the most attractive costumes and characters of the ballet. After his success with 'Die Puppenfee', Bakst would soon become one of the most prominent theatre designers of European modernism thanks to his important contributions to Diaghilev's Ballets Russes from 1908 onwards. Provenance: Physical description:Complete set of twelve loose postcards (14.3 x 9.1 cm) printed in colours after Bakst, most heightened with gilt. Condition:As usual some discrepancy in the cards colour: cards 1, 6, 11 and 12 are here lighter, the others more brown. Bibliography:

Scarce, striking visual propaganda from the pen of the great Ballets Russes designer. Originally published as a double-page spread in number 18 of Cocteau and Iribe's short-lived satirical publication Le Mot, captioned as above. This unlettered version was issued as a fundraiser in a signed edition of 100 on superior japon impérial., this copy number 3. Bakst's optimism was mistaken, the Carpathian Campaign of 1915 was a bloody disaster for the Russians, their mild successes against the Austro-Hungarians drew the Germans into the fray and rather than performing a grand jeté to Berlin the Russians were driven from Russian Poland, and never threatened their enemies' borders again. Decidedly uncommon, we have been unable to trace another copy. Lithograph, printed in red and black. Sheet size 570 x 440 mm. Framed size 565 x 690 mm. Very good. Presented in a dark stained oak frame with conservation acrylic glazing.
