Buch Erstausgabe
First edition; 8vo (21.7 x 14.2 cm); illustrated wrappers designed by Zamirailo, internally very fresh, repairs to edge of upper cover, small tear to upper cover, small water stains to upper and lower covers, booksellers' stamp and ink inscription to lower cover, a good copy; 112 pp. First edition of one of Blok's greatest achievements, only published after his death. Alexander Blok worked on Retribution for over eleven years, starting in 1910 and still writing fragments just days before his death in June 1921. His main concern for the epic autobiographical work in verse was its composition and he was never quite satisfied enough to publish it. 'Blok was tormented by the sense of his poem's elusiveness, inexplicability, by its ineluctable incompleteness. Whatever external reasons may have caused Retribution to remain unfinished, one of the main internal reasons lay with the organization of space' (Nina Segal). Kilgour 134.

Anbieter: Antiquariat CoBrA, Oberrohrbach, Österreich
Simferopol, Krymizdat 1923 - Crimea Originaleinband. Original publisher's wrappers Original pictorial soft cover wrappers illustrated with the portrait of Alexandr Blok. The book contains the famous poem "Scythians", which alongside with the enigmatic poem "The Twelve" interprets the revolutionary changes in Russia and describes Blok s opinions and attitudes to the revolution. This interesting representavive of Russian literary avant-garde books must be rare, because it was published not in the capital, but the periphery: in the Crimea, Simferopol. It was very necesarry for the new Soviet power not only to publish the poem there, but to comment it "in the correct way" in a foreword for the readers after the just finished ciwil war, where the Crimea (as now again) was a crucial territory. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Two volumes bound in one. *The Twelve* with a foreword by Pyotr Suvchinsky. Octavo. [3], 6-140; [2], 3-36pp. Text in Russian. Bound without wrappers into black cloth with edges sprinkled, paper spine label, and cloth-reinforced hinges. Ex-Russian Educational Society of Chelsea, Massachusetts with their stamp four times in the text. Brief canceled note on front fly, modest wear, final leaf of *Summer* with two areas of label residue affecting one paragraph of text (still legible), occasional very light stain or bit of creasing in the text, very good. Early editions of Gorky's play *Summer* (usually titled *Summerfolk*) and the unusual and Alexander Block's controversial long poem *The Twelve*, about 23 Red Guards walking the streets of wintery, revolutionary Petrograd. This edition of "The Twelve" is notable for a 12-page foreword by the founder of the J. Ladyschnikow press, Pyotr Suvchinsky. We admit our Russian isn't flawless, but Suvchinsky in his introduction appears to champion the poem as not only a great work, but also an anti-Revolutionary poem. Both works are very uncommon in these editions. *OCLC* locates four copies of this edition of *The Twelve* (Harvard, Washington, UCLA, Cal). *OCLC* locates four copies of this edition of *Summer* (Smith, Indiana University, Boston Public Library, University of Melbourne).
