A SUPERB ALBUM, WITH SHARP, HAND-COLORED IMAGES OF JAPAN Co-photographer was Kusakabe Kimbei [1841-1934] who operated a studio on Benten-dori, Yokohama in 1881. In 1885, he mana- ged to acquire a number of Beato and Stillfried negatives which were reprinted in his albums. Tamamura: [1856-19??] worked from his Yokohama studio. He was later commissioned to provide all the photos appearing the the famous Capt. F. Brinkley book on Japan. Strong on Yokohama-Kanagawa scenes. This charming album beings with 25 scenic views of Japan: Nagoya castle, Ueno park Tokio, Nezame at Nakasendo, Hommoku Yokohama, Honganji Temple Kyoto, Fuji from Hakone Lake, Lake at Nikko, Matsushima, Dogashima Hakone, Hikone garden, view of Matsushima, Iris garden Tokio, Flying carp flags for May boy's day, Yokohama town, Shimbashi Tokio, Sanmaibashi Umoto Tokkaido [a long wooden bridge], Hakone Lake, Benten Bashi Yokohama [triple stone bridge], Hatoba at Yokohama, Wisteria blossoms Tokio, Waraido Nikko, Chuzenji, Wistaria Flower To- kio, Sacred Bridge at Nikko, Lotus Pond Kamakura. Some of these photos have numbers which correspond exactly as those listed in Bennett, attributing them. The verso contains 25 photographs all of women, except one for a merchant using his Soroban. These show 6 Japanese women's portraits, 18 other photos of Japanese women at their chores, or flower arranging, playing music, having lunch, playing Karuta [card game], painting a Kimono, story telling, playing parlor and new years games, riding a rickshaw, being carried in a pala- nquin and enjoying cherry blossom viewing, walking in the winter evening with a lantern large umbrella, farm girls fl- ailing rice, picking tea, &c. All of these women are elabor- ately dressed in beautiful silk Kimono, with period coif- feur coiffeur. Each is nicely hand-colored in pastel, very light on the bright reds, very sharp images, not faded, nic- ely done. Some images are numbered and labeled in the negat- ive in English, which match those found in T. Bennett: EARLY IMAGES OF JAPAN. Images with numbers 174, 264 & 748, match his index. Absolut ladenfrischer Zustand. Wunderbare Rock'n Roll/ Race Music Serie. Elvis fehlt natürlich, weil er zu teuer ist. Aber sonst : Gute Serie. Die Original-Takes der Original-Künstler, so, wie sie in den Hitparaden waren. Bleiben wir ehrlich : So absolut phantastisch, wie uns das Label glauben machen will, ist die Qualität oft nicht. Das liegt zum Teil an der unseligen Rauschunterdrückung, zum Teil gibt es manches wirklich nur noch als Übernahme von einer abgespielten Single, weil das Originalband 1973, zur Ölkrise, aus Bandmangel neu überspielt wurde. Wenn man z.B. eine CD von z.B. Frankie Avalon beim Original-Rechtsinhaber kauft, ist die Qualität oft entscheidend besser, oft aber auch nur unwesentlich. Aber wer kann schon tausende von CD's, zum Teil nur wegen einem einzigen Titel -und vielen überflüssigen Mitkäufen- erwerben; und vieles ist ja schon lange nicht mehr lieferbar oder nur auf anderen Samplern zu haben. Fazit : Hier stimmt einfach das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis ! Versand nur gegen Vorkasse. At 1349 pages (1488 pages softcover) and 591,552 words, the book is one of the longest novels ever published in a single volume in the English language. A sequel, to be called A Suitable Girl, is due for publication in 2013. Plot introduction: A Suitable Boy is set in post-independence, post-partition India. The novel follows the story of four families over a period of 18 months as a mother searches for a suitable boy to marry her daughter. The 1349-page novel alternatively offers satirical and earnest examinations of national political issues in the period leading up to the first post-Independence national election of 1952, including inter-sectarian animosity, the status of lower caste peoples such as the jatav, land reform and the eclipse of the feudal princes and landlords, academic affairs, inter- and intra-family relations and a range of further issues of importance to the characters. A suitable boy centres on Mrs. Rupa Mehra's efforts to arrange the marriage of her younger daughter, Lata, with a "suitable boy". At the heart of the novel it is a love story, set in a young, newly independent India. It begins in the fictional town of Brahmpur, located on the Ganges between Banares and Patna. Brahmpur, along with Calcutta, Delhi, Kanpur and other Indian cities, forms a colourful backdrop for the emerging stories. Lata is a 19-year-old college girl, vulnerable, yet determined to have her own way and not be influenced by her strong mother and opinionated brother, Arun. Her story revolves around the choice she is forced to make between her suitors, Kabir, Haresh, and Amit. The novel is not simply based on one story. This epic novel covers the various issues faced by post-independence India, including Hindu-Muslim strife, abolition of the Zamindari system, land reforms and empowerment of Muslim women. The novel is divided into 19 parts, with each part focussing on a different story (and eventually coming back round again). For example part 1 is about Lata's story; part 2 is about a courtesan (the beginning of a major subplot featuring Maan Kapoor); part 3 is about Lata again; part 4 is about Haresh; part 5 is about the Brahmpur political scene etc. Each part is described by a rhyming couplet on the contents page. ...
