Erstausgabe
First edition of Stirner's second work, a compilation of texts documenting the history of reaction, published seven years after his most famous work, Der Einzige und sein Eigentum, a treatise in defense of philosophic egoism that "carried to its extreme the young Hegelian reaction against Hegel's teachings" (Edwards). Written in the context of the recent 1848 revolutions in various German states, Geschichte der Reaction is mainly a collection of the works of others, selected and translated by Stirner, with an introduction and some additional passages written by him. Edmund Burke and Auguste Comte are quoted at length to show their opposing views of revolution. Ziengenfuss II, p. 642. Edwards, The Encyclopedia of Philosophy 8, p. 17. Two parts in one volume (230 x 137 mm). Recently rebound in sheep-backed mottled boards, vellum tips, original leather spine label preserved. Pagination jump between pages 224 and 255 but complete. Short marginal tear to one leaf, fore-edge dust-soiled, faint evidence of library stamp to uncut lower edge; a good copy of a scarce work.
