"It is almost four hundred years since the first English pioneers arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, eager to start a new life. They introduced a plantation society that spread rapidly throughout the Southern States of the U.S.A. - a society that for two centuries made great fortunes but also introduced slavery into the thriving tobacco and cotton fields. The Civil War changed everything: thousands of lives were lost, vast areas were devastated and four million slaves suddenly found themselves free - but with nowhere to go. Poverty was rife, but slowly the South was rebuilt and today it is challenging its Northern neighbours in the fields of commerce, industry and politics. Much of the Old South, however, still remains. Colonial Virginia still retains a great deal of the influence of its early English settlers, Louisiana the French and Florida the Spanish. Grand, porticoed antebellum mansions stand proudly among magnolias and dogwoods; marble statues of Confederate soldiers can be seen in nearly every town square and battle sites and Civil War memorabilia have been carefully preserved. Gospel songs and jazz blues and bluegrass music predominate and Southern cuisine - a blend of that of several nations - is unforgettable. The gracious good manners of the Old South depicted in Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" also remain. Although the magnificent color photographs, specially taken for this book, cannot convey the warmth of Southern hospitality, they surely serve as a guide to the many wonderful sights in this fascinating part of the United States."
