Bailey, H.W. Dictionary of Khotan Saka. Cambridge, University Press, 1979. ; Schutzumschlag / dust cover ISBN: 0521217377
Sakan is a name of two extinct Iranian languages which were spoken in Xinjiang, China. They are identified with the cities of Khotan and Tumxuk, namely Khotanese language and Tumshuqese language. Many Prakrit terms were borrowed from the Khotanese language into the Tocharian languages. (Wikipedia) The Hotan Prefecture is located in the south-western part of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. It is sometimes (unofficially) spelled as Khotan. The Cambridge University Press has published (1945-67) in six volumes Professor Sir Harold Bailey's transcriptions of Saka manuscripts found in Sin Kiang and Kansu (of the ancient kingdom of Khotan) in the last decade of this century (20th century). .........This dictionary represents the fulfilment of a plan fromed in 1934 which required first the editing and transcription of the manuscripts and then the slow elucidation of the whole corpus of texts. It contains a linguistic analysis and translation of all the Iranian words used in the texts. It is the necessary key to the understanding of the texts, to the mastery of the language itself and to the linking of Khotan Saka (Hotan Saka) into the Indo-European linguistic tradition.
