Tolkiens The Lord of the Rings, und auch mehr als fünfzig Jahre nach seiner Erstpublikation hat die Debatte um den literarischen Wert des Romans nichts von ihrem kontroversen Potential verloren. Indessen steht die Trilogie nach wie vor hoch in der Gunst des Lesepublikums, und schon in Anbetracht ihrer imposanten Verkaufszahlen stellt sich dem Literaturwissenschaftler umso dringender die Frage, ob Tolkiens opus magnum auch als eine Form der kulturellen Selbstauslegung und als Ausdruck gesellschaftlicher oder politischer Ideale zu verstehen ist.
