pp. 589 + Philadelphia engraved mezzotint portraits (including two of Napoleon, and one of Lafayette) and maps (including one large folding map). Some offsetting and age stain. Title page repaired at inner margin, without loss. With a few early manuscript marginal critical notes. XLib. 4to. 248 mm. Disbound. "William Duane (1760-1835) was born near Lake Champlain, New York. He was educated in Ireland, learned the business of printing, and in 1784 went to India, where he amassed property rapidly, and became editor of a journal called 'The World'. Having taken sides against the local government in a dispute with some of its troops, he was invited by the governor, Sir John Shaw, to breakfast, and while on the way to meet the appointment was seized by Sepoys, put on board a vessel, carried to England, and his large fortune confiscated. After vainly petitioning parliament and the East India Company for redress, he became editor of the 'General Advertiser' (which was subsequently merged in the 'London Times'). In 1795 he returned to the U.S. and became editor of the 'Philadelphia Aurora'. The Aurora became the leading organ of the Democratic Party. Jefferson attributed his election to the presidency to its vigorous support." - Appleton's Encyclopedia. He published numerous books of importance. His history of the French Revolution was originally published in four volumes, but this scarce re-issued (called: 'Vol. I') is complete in itself, and is very important for its discussion of the burgeoning naval war between the U.S. and France. In this quasi-war the new U.S. Navy received its baptism of fire. The frigate Constellation won two complete victories over French men-of-war; and U.S. naval squadrons, operating principally in West Indian waters, sought out and attacked enemy privateers until France agreed to an honorable settlement.
